The force of the water downhill can force it uphill a bit. However, there are mechanical pumps that depending on the flowrate of the water can shoot water a considerable distance uphill.? The Mayan's built cisterns that functioned like venturi jets and sent water up to the top of their large pyramids so that their emperors' and other high caste individuals could have fresh water at the top.? The cisterns angled downhill and narrowed so that the water could build up the necessary energy to move up to the top of the buildings.
