AN EVENING ABOUT EARTH BUILDINGS .. Call it Green, Sustainable, Natural,
Earth... or even Alternative Buildings... but its been around for thousands
of years. With two documentaries focusing on the pioneers of building homes
with mud, straw, earth, sand, rammed earth, and adobe you will leave the
theatre wondering why there isn't more earth architecture in this country.
And you will be delighted and inspired to know that there is a renaissance of
natural building ... and its happening right here in SLO County.
As a complement to the current issue of HopeDance Magazine (focusing on
Sustainable and Affordable Housing), these documentaries bring it all to life
with people who are breaking the ground in this new yet ancient tradition.
"The Strawbale Solution" (30min) focuses on the work of the strawbale home
construction and "At Home With Mother Earth" (narrated by Eartha Kitt; 40min)
celebrates Earth Architecture around the world...featuring such pioneers as
Nader Khalili (of Hesperia, CA) and David Easton (of Sonoma County) as well
as Middle Eastern palaces to middle income townhouses in central France to
ingeniously efficient American Indian Pueblos.
What emerges is a portrait of a way of building that may very well
provide answers to the pressing problems of environmental sustainability and
the global shelter crisis.
We are very forunate to have with us the director of AT HOME WITH MOTHER
EARTH, David Weisman, to answer questions after the films. Mr. Weisman has wo
n numerous awards for his conscientious documentaries... including such
topics as squatting in Manila ("On Borrowed Land"), revealing the story of
the indigenous people who lived on Mt. Pinatubo prior to its devastating
eruption ("The Last Refuge"), and revealing the roots of the environmental
crisis throughout the world ("Preserving the Legacy"). He currently resides
in Morro Bay.
As a humorous intermission we will be delighted to see (for the first
time on a large screen in SLO County) the Adbusters infamous UNcommercials
(15min).
