Dear Friends of the San Diego Permaculture Center,
One of the principles of permaculture design is to meet multiple needs with
the resources we have available to us. Joint-use parks that are shared by a
school and the community are a good example of this concept.
This week the design process for two new urban joint-use parks will begin.
As Chair of the University Heights Park & Recreation Council, I am
particularly pleased to invite you to the design meeting for the Birney
School joint-use park on Monday, September 10, 6-8pm, in the school
auditorium at 4345 Campus Avenue (the corner of Meade Ave. & Campus). The
San Diego Permaculture Center has been a proponent of this project since
2000. The school playing field was formerly an active ballpark used by many
San Diegans over the years. Nighttime games at the corner of Park Blvd and
Meade Avenue were a central part of the community experience. The playing
field was closed to community use in 1997 and used instead for temporary
classrooms while other school sites were being built.
The second joint-use park being built will be just down the road at
Roosevelt Middle School. The design meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 11,
6-8pm in the school auditorium at 3366 Park Blvd (at Upas St on the edge of
Balboa Park).
Both meetings are free and open to the public. For more information,
contact City Project Manager Barry Kelleher, (619) 525-8286.
Hope to see you there!
Marcia Boruta
