[Central Coast CA Permaculture] idealism meets realism

Hello SLO Permaculture Guild,

 

Wanted you to know about a couple of things that are mixing idealism and
realism.. The Palm Theatre is showing "The Biggest Little Farm" movie and
FARMGIRLS Summer Camp is registration is open till the end of next week!!
These two things go hand in hand in that we need PEOPLE to make regenerative
agriculture possible. Together we can create a food system that is
regenerative, local, healthy and resilient. 

 

1.       The Biggest Little Farm movie is now showing at the Palm Theatre
every day at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. (no 7pm on Thursday) for the next week

John Chester (Lost in Woonsocket, Rock Prophecies) directs this documentary
about his and his wife's developing a sustainable farm on a 200-acre patch
of depleted ground in Ventura County. They work to rehabilitate the soil,
plant orchards and row crops, and raise a variety of animals. Hoping to live
in harmony with nature, they discover that nature isn't always interested in
living in harmony with them. (91 min.) Their guru, who passed away in 2014,
was a biodynamic vineyard manager, Alan York. You can read a bit about him

To quote Glen Starkey: "You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll watch in wonder
through the magic of birth, death, and everything in between. Mostly, I was
reminded of how unbelievably difficult farming can be and the deep work
ethic and perseverance it takes to continue in the face of adversity. For
anyone with a passing interest in food or farming, this is a must-see."

FARMGIRLS Summer Camp is Girl Power for our Future Food System!  FARMGIRLS
Summer Camp is held at Our Global Family Farm, a permaculture demonstration
site located at City Farm SLO. It features food crops and indigenous food
cropping systems from the four corners of the globe. FARMGIRLS Summer Camp
will include farming, cooking, eating, making crafts, singing and nature
hikes. The FARMGILRS summer camp is a place where women and girls of all
ages can learn about how to grow food in an ecological approach that follows
the ethics of permaculture: care for the earth, care for one another, and
share the abundance.  

FARMGIRLS Summer Camp is now open to women too. We want to see generations
of women and girls be empowered to learn about agriculture and to grow their
own food! Start signing up now!!! Registration closes on June 21st at
midnight!

 

Also there will be a locally run PDC (Permaculture Design Course) this fall
in Lompoc at the Sunburst Sanctuary. https://sunburst.org/pdc/ 

It will be taught by Loren Luyendyk of Permaculture Design International,
and the folks who steward the Sunburst land in many ways including Sean
Fennell, Betty Seaman (Cob Betty), Sandy Anderson and Heiko Wirtz. They all
bring idealism and realism together on the Sunburst Sanctuary property.
