[Central Coast CA Permaculture] Get into local permaculture!

Hello SLO Permaculture Guild,

Here are some upcoming local permaculture related events. Sorry for the late
notice, but one of them is tomorrow, June 13th and another on Friday, June
14th. The good news is that institutions like Cal Poly and RCD (both Coast
San Luis RCD and Upper Salinas Las Tablas RCD) and Morro Bay National
Estuary Project are promoting permaculture practices. And, another piece of
good news is that we will have a local PDC this fall.

Local PDC - Definitely consider getting your PDC with local permaculture
folks at Sunburst Sanctuary this Fall. Scroll down to see more!

Permaculture Demo Garden at City Farm - Our Global Family Village is our
place to create a thriving food forest to demonstrate to the public. Your
creativity, your hands and your heart are needed on the land. The more a
land is loved by people, the more the land gives back its love to us. It is
up to us to give our love to the land. Come get involved in our local
project this summer. The corn just got planted and the grape vines are lush
this year. Tree Lees is out there on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (except I
am going to the Healthy Soils Seminar tomorrow, June 13th) and work parties
are on the second Saturday of each month at 9am to 12noon. Come get
reconnected with the land. We are locate at 1221 Calle Joaquin Road, the
frontage road along Highway 101 & LOVR.

School Field Trips to Our Global Family Farm at City Farm

This spring the land was loved by children who came for school field trips
to City Farm. They loved the Global Garden and the cob house! Come show some
love to the land by visiting it, tending it, connecting with it, and
nurturing it. Flyer of field trip offerings is attached.

Please spread the word about FARMGIRLS Summer Camp. We have room for another
six girls to come learn about regenerative farming. We have an anonymous
donor is willing to give scholarships to ten girls to attend. She is
networking with local charity organizations to find families in need of the
scholarships.

No-till and Cover Crop Management with Grazing

No-till is increasingly being recognized as a useful form of management that
can result in multiple benefits, and a practice that can be part of an
integrated approach to soil health. Tablas Creek Vineyard is unique among
North County vineyards for their use of grazing animals as part of their
organic and biodynamic program. As a participating vineyard in the Cal Poly
Healthy Soils Project, Tablas Creek is serving as a demonstration site to
investigate the links between soil building practices such as no-till and
grazing of cover crops, and measures of soil carbon, water holding capacity,
and greenhouse gas emissions. 

During this demonstration field day, Tablas Creek vineyard managers will
discuss their unique soil management strategy, Cal Poly researchers will
discuss the preliminary findings of their field trials, and additional guest
speakers will discuss approaches to soil management, as well as its
implications for grape quality.

Funded through California Climate Investments, the Healthy Soils Program
(HSP) has funded the implementation of soil health practices on 8,610 acres
of farm and ranchland throughout California.  These projects are estimated
to collectively sequester 18,683 metric tons of CO2e annually, or the

June 25-28 - FARMGIRLS Summer Camp

FARMGIRLS Summer Camp is Girl Power for our Future Food System!  FARMGIRLS
Summer Camp is held at Our Global Family Farm, a permaculture demonstration
site located at City Farm SLO. It features food crops and indigenous food
cropping systems from the four corners of the globe. FARMGIRLS Summer Camp
will include farming, cooking, eating, making crafts, singing and nature
hikes. The FARMGILRS summer camp is a place where women and girls of all
ages can learn about how to grow food in an ecological approach that follows
the ethics of permaculture: care for the earth, care for one another, and
share the abundance.  Together we can create a food system that is
Regenerative, Healthy, Local, and Resilient.

September 16-29, 2019 - Permaculture Design Course (PDC) at Sunburst
Sanctuary

The course offers an in-depth introduction into permaculture with a
diversity of applications:
- Abundant water
- Living soils
- Renewable energy
- Healthy plants
- Water-harvesting earthworks
- Natural building

The head instructor for this course is Loren Luyendyk of Permaculture Design
International with additional specialists and professionals. The 14-day
course focuses on land based systems with as much practical, outdoor
hands-on work as possible. Class time consists of traditional lectures,
guest presentations, group discussions, games, exercises, photo shows,
movies, and practical design work. 

Sunburst Sanctuary is a majestic, 4000-acre ranch 30 miles north of Santa
Barbara in the rolling hills of California's Central Coast region. The site
is a rich setting for studying a broad range of regenerative systems, as it
includes vegetable production and emerging fruit production systems;
rangeland and livestock; small- and large-scale compost production; thriving
wilderness and wildlife; extensive creek systems; a meditation retreat
center; and a cooperative residential community.

Care of the earth and growing organic food have been perennial themes of
Sunburst Community's 50-year history of living together, working together,
and raising consciousness on the planet. Sunburst was an early pioneer of
large-scale production and distribution of organic foods, and remains
committed to seeking ways that humanity can have a beneficial rather than
harmful impact on the planet and each other.
