June 12 Fri. Visioning a Permaculture Site with noted permaculturist Larry
Santoyo (see bio at end of calendar) at Community Environmental Council (CEC)
Gildea Resourse Center, 930 Miramonte Drive, Santa Barbara, 7:30pm. Donation
$3. Jim Bell will assist. Please park on the street because of the winding
driveway and small lot.
June 13-14 Sat./Sun. Patterns: Evaluating Permaculture Site Designs - two-day
workshop with Larry Santoyo. Larry will lead us to understand natures
patterns and how to connect with them. We will evaluate as many as 5 urban and
rural design sites in our area. Sat. / Sun. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Pre-
registration needed, workshop $75. The course will start Sat. at CEC with a
half day lecture followed by site visits, and on Sun. in Goleta at a chosen
site. Contact Margie Bushman 962-2571 for info and registration. SCPGuild
members and PDC graduates Jim Bell, Denise Bourque and Todd Buynak with be
assistant teachers. Flyer and Registration form included.
June 21-July 4 Permaculture Design Course Earth Stewardship and Community
two-week residential course on Cal Poly SLO campus, featuring Larry Santoyo
and senior instructors from throughout the West. The course begins and ends
with Summer Solstice celebrations. This is a great opportunity to live and
learn permaculture in a temporary village where meals and services are
developed with permaculture practices in mind. Call Cal Poly Conference

July 1 Wed. South Coast Permaclture Guild Meeting at the CEC Gildea Resource
Center, 7:00 pm. Come and bring problems and solutions for discussion as we
work with permaculture site designs. We will also present a short video and
slides on the famous 20 year old Village Homes project in Davis, CA., designed
by Michael Corbet. A housing development that children and adults love, using
many permaculture ideas with fruit trees everywhere. This will also be a
planning meeting for those who want to go on the roadtrip to visit Village

July 11 - 12 Sat. / Sun Road Trip to Village Homes in Davis, CA
Village Homes was built 20 years ago as an ambitious eco-housing projects that
has matured beautifully. It was designed to use its drainage water on the land
in ponds and swales, grow food, use vines to shade houses, lessen car contact
with pedestrian traffic. Come see it and be inspired, it can be done. No
charge. Please note the July 1 planning meeting. Contact Wes or Margie
962-2571 to arrange car pooling, camping, etc.
June 15-19 thru July Summer Camp Farming Fun for children at CECs urban farm
camp experience. This years camp has expanded to include 2 full days at
Fairview Gardens 12 acre organic farm. Camp will include planting seeds,
harvesting, work in greenhouses, nature walks games art etc. Camp sessions 8
am -5 pm Mon - Fri. . Sessions for 2nd-3rd grades and 4th-7th grades. Cost

Future Events - Strawbale, cob building to be announced
September Spermaculture of Permaculture lecture at the CEC Gildea Resource
Center with Permaculture Teacher and Site Designer Bill Roley. Bill will share
his experience from projects in SoCal and Mexico. Dr. Roley is the Director of
Permaculture Institute of Southern CA based in Laguna Beach.

Permaculture Teachers Course Two-day workshop with Bill Roley. This is hands-
on training for anyone who wants to teach permaculture. Work will focus on
theory, curriculum development and creating a design toolkit. A teachers
guide will be available for the course. Please let Wes and Bill know your

Fall Permaculture Course Reunion at the Ojai Foundation. Margie Bushman is
wondering if any one else is interested in having a permaculture course
reunion. Contact her to get this going.

Larry is an internationally recognized Land Use Planner and Environmental
Business Consultant. He has over fifteen years experience in resource
protection and natural systems management. He has taught environmental design
courses at UC Berkeley and CalPoly San Luis Obispo. Larry is one of the
nation's premier Permaculture designers and teachers.
Guild Member News
Financial scholarships fund. We are looking to offer financial scholarships to
our SCPG workshops. Our workshops are organized on a break-even basis to keep
costs down. If any individuals or organizations can contribute to a financial
scholarship for one (or more) workshops, please call Margie Bushman or Wes
Roe. Perhaps we could sponsor someone from our guild to attend the Cal Poly
SLO Design Course June 21.
Can gardens help youth at risk? Join the effort on Saturdays 4 - 8 pm to
enhance the gardens at Villa Esperanza, SB Juvenile Detention Center. Call

Historical and recent aerial photos of SB County - very helpful when designing
sites. Contact County Cartographer Mark Bright, 568-2088 to make an
appointment. The 1956 aerial photos shows great detail which you can only view
at the county. But you can look at the 1997 color aerial photos and purchase
