CA Straw Symposium (Final Notice)

On Saturday and Sunday May 23 and 24, from 9:30am to 3:30pm Cal Poly
State University in San Luis Obispo hosts the California Straw Building
Symposium and Workshop.

Instruction will be offered by some of the most progressive architects
and experienced straw builders in the nation, including Ken Haggard,
Polly Cooper, and Bob Theis. Other respected straw professionals will be
with us.

This special weekend is part of the Cal Poly Permaculture and Ecological
Design Series coordinated by Akiva Werbalowsky, Julian Kayne, and senior
Permaculture designer Larry Santoyo.

Registration is $98 ($49 for each day).Saturday will include
instruction, slides, discussion, and demonstrations of basic techniques.
Sunday will be mainly hands-on activities building with straw (and many
other materials readily available on site) alongside experienced others.

STRAW HAPPENS!

Saturday (9:30-3:30) will be mostly at the Crops Unit (corner of
Highland Drive and Mount Bishop Road): presentations, discussions,
slides, etc. by learned and experienced straw bale elders
such as Profs. Polly Cooper, Ken Haggard, and Bob Theis. Sunday
(9:30-3:30) will also include (weather permitting) "learn by doing"
experience actually constructing with straw bales alongside experienced
others at the Permaculture Center/Student Experimental Farm. Breaks both
days for lunch from 12noon-1:15. Bring your own lunch or something to
share if you like, many restaurants and a great health food store are
within a five minute bike ride.

Bring gloves, appropriate footware and attire, musical instruments
(party in the evenings?), sunscreen, bags for taking home produce
harvested from organic gardens, positive attitudes

For overnight accommodations contact Rob Kimmel of the Central Coast
Permaculture Guild 438-KRIK (5745) (who will know of home stay
possibilities) or contact the SLO Chamber of Commerce re: youth hostel
and hotels.
