although lots of imperfections in our democracy we could focus on,
sometimes you gotta take the opportunities where they exist and
present themselves. participatory democracy, means you have to participate!
we have 3 strong environmental candidates running for City Council,
that most of us (and our organizations) have access to in a small
city like Santa Barbara. we could use a receptive ear when we come
forward with our ideas...
so much can be accomplished at the city & local level that can
trickle up. cities across the country are tackling issues like
climate change, food security issues, energy & transportation, not
waiting for federal & state governments. It's time to scale up,
return Santa Barbara to the forefront and be a leader in
sustainability, not rest on our laurels from past decades. we need
leaders in city government to do this, and we need to be their
constituency, weigh in with our ideas...happily, this community is
full of creative & smart people with lots of strategies & ideas.
Permaculture always talks about "invisible structures", the
constructs that make up the world we live in, that we barely notice
until they don't work. city government, like anything else we look
at from a design perspective, could use some design tweaks, meaning,
don't take it for granted, look at how it functions, see where we can
all come in with positive solutions (small & large) to make the
construct work better.
