EXAMINING GLOBAL WARMING
Local Scientist and Author to Lecture at Solvang and Central Libraries
April 18,19 Solvang 7pm & SB 6:30pm "Global Warming -- Thinking it
Through Together." local scientist and author James Lawrence Powel
The public is invited to join local scientist and author James Lawrence
Powell for two free community lectures titled, "Global Warming --
Thinking it Through Together."
The first lecture will be held at the Solvang Veterans Memorial Hall,
1745 Mission Drive, Solvang, on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. It is
co-sponsored by the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society and the
Santa Barbara Public Library System, as part of this spring's
"Green at YourLibrary" program series.* Powell will also be speaking at
6:30 p.m. the following night, April 19, in the Faulkner Gallery of the
Santa Barbara Central Library, 40 E. Anapamu St. This lecture is
co-sponsored by the Community Environmental Council, SBCC Center for
Sustainability, the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network, and the Santa
Barbara Public Library System.
"If you are curious about the debate over global warming, this program
will provide a good opportunity to reason it through together," Powell
said. "You don't have to be a scientist to understand the evidence," he
added.
Powell received his Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and his distinguished career has included
positions as a college teacher, college president, and museum director.
Both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush appointed Powell to
the National Science Board. He is the author of nine books on earth
science for general audiences, including Grand Canyon: Solving Earth's
Grandest Puzzle and Dead Pool: Lake Powell, Global Warming, and the
Future of Water in the West . He taught at Oberlin College and served as
its acting president. He has also been president of Franklin and
Marshall College, Reed College, the Franklin Institute Science Museum in
Philadelphia, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.
He currently serves as executive director of the National Physical
Science Consortium.
" Those who have attended any of Jim Powell's previous lectures can
vouch that you will not want to miss this event", said John Evarts,
lecture chair for the natural history society. "We are excited to host a
talk by a scientist who has closely studied this issue," Evarts added.
There will be time after the program fo r discussion and, at the Solvang
event, a book signing with the author.
