School Gardening workshops feature a school garden tour, a power
point presentation (School Gardens of Santa Barbara County), plus a
question and answer session.
Participants will learn: How to start or enhance a school garden,
non-toxic organic gardening methods, designing a school garden as an
outdoor classroom, where to get supplies, what to plant when,
gardening projects, gardening curriculum, group management, and a
monthly planting calendar for the Santa Barbara area. Garden snacks
will be provided. Participates receive a Garden Detectives
curriculum, free seeds, organic plant starts and handouts.
The School Composting Workshop focuses on composting food and garden
waste in a school setting. Learn the basics of decomposition,
different composting methods (worm bins, hot piles, static piles,
pocket composting, and mulching,) harvesting and using compost,
compost tea, sizing your system, compost collection, and
troubleshooting. Learn how Peabody Charter School composts food
scraps from the cafeteria kitchen, students' lunches and the garden.
Snacks from the garden will be provided. Participates will receive a
copy of Garden Detectives curriculum, free seeds, organic plant
starts and handouts.
