Greetings to all!  Hopefully a few of the opportunities listed below will
catch your attention and make it into your various planning calendars.
Listings number 4 and 8 will be of special interest to farmers and as usual
there are several unique educational offerings and scholarship possibilities
to investigate as well. Be sure to make note of the April 30th Earth Day

1. NEW FRONTIERS' 5% WEDNESDAY- Shop New Frontiers on April 20, 2005!
All day long on Wednesday, April 20th, 5% of purchases made at New Frontiers
Natural Marketplace of San Luis Obispo will be donated to the SARC.  Please
show your support for the SARC and sustainability by shopping at one of our
much appreciated community supporters. Thank you New Frontiers!

2. The Provost's Office and the Academic Senate's newly formed Sustainability
Committee will sponsor an EARTH DAY CELEBRATION to promote "greening the
Campus" on Friday April 22, noon-5 p.m.  The event will take place at the
lower plaza of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the
Orfalea College of Business lawn and the College of Education patio.  It
follows last year's signing of the Talloires Declaration pledging that Cal
Poly will join hundreds of universities worldwide in promoting sustainable

3. The Sustainable Agriculture Club, in cooperation with the Environmental
Horticulture Club, Wildlife Club and the California Students for
Sustainability Coallition (CSSC), are hosting the second annual EARTH DAY
FESTIVAL, which will be held on Saturday, April 30th at the beautiful Leaning
Pine Arboretum on the Cal Poly campus.  The event will run from noon to 5 p.m.
and feature live music, food, information and presentations on earth-friendly
practices and technologies.  The free event is open to the public.  For more

4.  A workshop for BEGINNING AND ASPIRING CENTRAL COAST FARMERS seeking to
establish or expand their operations and network with retiring and other
aspiring farmers will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2005 at the Monterey
County Farm Bureau, at 931 Blanco Circle, in Salinas from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00
p.m..  The "Business Planning and Innovative Farm Financing Workshop" will be
held first followed by a reception with supper from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Lastly a
Farm Succession Planning session will be held from 6:30 p.m.to 9:00 p.m..
Farmers of all ages are welcome to attend the free workshops and reception.

5. The 3RD ANNUAL ENACT: NUTRITION AND ACTIVITY DAY will be held on Thursday,
April 28th at the Capitol Building in Sacramento.  On this day, parents,
health professionals, community advocates, students, educators and others
concerned about nutrition and physical activity will gather in Sacramento to
meet with legislators about policy solutions to the obesity epidemic.  For
those who are interested in attending, there are travel scholarships

6. The INTERNATIONAL SHORT COURSE ON AGROECOLOGY for 2005 will be held in
Santa Cruz, California from July 10-23.  This year's course will have a
special focus on the interactions between human and ecological communities in
food systems, from rural producers to urban consumers.  It will consist of
lectures, demonstrations, and field application.  Discussions of course
concepts will be complemented with on-farm experiences in research and
production problems.  There will be individual and group presentations, group
discussions, hands-on lab and field activities, field trips and the
preparation of a case study demonstrating principles of agroecology and
sustainability based on agroecosystems in participant's home areas.  The
course is jointly organized by Dr. Stephen R. Gliessman's agroecology research
group at the Department of Environmental Studies (UCSC) the Program in
Community and Agroecology (PICA) and the Community and Agroecology Network
(CAN).  Applications from research centers, government, non-governmental
organizations, universities, private institutions, community development
groups, farmers, teachers, and agricultural professionals are encouraged.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be granted a Certificate of
Participation. Applications are due May 1, 2005.  There is limited

7.  The California Agriculture Teachers' Association (CATA) and the Center for
Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) at the University of
California, Santa Cruz are offering the "SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE TRAINING
PROGRAM" for the first time on Friday, June 17.  The one-day course will take
place at the CASFS Farm on the UCSC campus.  The registration deadline is June
1st.  The program includes: free accommodations on the UCSC campus; tours and
discussion sessions with CASFS staff and faculty; catered organic foods lunch
and tours of two central coast certified organic farms.  The course will
cover: an introduction to agroecology  and sustainable food systems soil
fertility; pest management and crop trials;  direct marketing; biologically-
intensive pest management; organic nursery production; organic fruit tree
management; the role of social sciences in developing sustainable food and
agricultural systems; methods and resources for experiential sustainable ag.
education.  The training program is intended for instructors and
administrators at colleges and universities who are interested in the
principles and practices of agricultural sustainability and those developing
sustainable and organic agriculture courses or programs at their

3rd annual Zaca Lake retreat in Santa Barbara entitled "Creating the Future:
