EVENT DESCRIPTION:  Meet Michael Bedar and others who were involved in the production of the film as they introduce Ecoparque.  After the film, join in an active discussion and a Q&A session with Mr. Bedar.

FILM DESCRIPTION:   EcoParque is a video about community, gardening, coastal areas, freedom, environmental responsibility, borders, and art.

This film explores the creation and impact of Ecoparque, the place--a park flourishing on a formerly barren urban hillside thanks to an innovative system that uses residents' wastewater not only to transform one canyon, but to make a scientific and economic case for neighborhood-scale, nature-mimicking facilities being preferable over centralized conveyance and chemical treatment for many canyon communities. 

Nestled into a steep, barren hillside overlooking the Rio Tijuana, only a few miles south of the US-Mexico border, a creative experiment in natural resource management is taking place on a daily basis. The location is known as EcoParque, and the experiment involves taking treated wastewater that is normally discharged into the ocean, and re-using it to irrigate and transform an otherwise arid slope into a verdant park and small wildlife preserve, complete with lush hiking trails and magnificent views of downtown Tijuana. HANDS-ON EM BOKASHI WORKSHOP

EVENT DESCRIPTION:  While focusing mainly on EM's uses in the home, other topics discussed will include the history of EM's discovery, how EM is being used in many different industries to reduce or eliminate pollution, medicinal use of EM, EM's role in global ecology, and of course EM's many uses in organic agriculture. The workshop will also include a hands-on demonstration of making Activated EM and EM bokashi (bokashi = fermented organic matter).

BACKGROUND:   Chip's interest in agriculture began in 2000 when he started enjoying the produce from the Santa Monica farmer's markets. It was there that he connected with a small, family owned and operated farm in Malibu named Vital Zuman (www.vitalzuman.com). During the 18 months as a volunteer at Vital Zuman and working the farmer's market selling produce from the farm, Chip helped Vital Zuman gain the reputation of having the freshest, locally grown produce in Los Angeles. He had also entered into the raw food circles in Santa Monica through his presence at the farmer's markets. His interest in raw food is what lead him to discover the Tree of Life in Arizona through a friend that was employed there. After volunteering in the Tree of Life gardens for one week, he was offered the position of garden assistant and later garden manager. It was at the Tree of Life, that Chip was under the tutelage of John Phillips, an authority in organic farming with over 35 years of experience. John introduced Chip to EM (effective microorganisms) as a means of solving many of the problems that face an organic grower. John also taught Chip about the many other uses of EM ranging from waste control to medicinal use. Chip has had extensive experience with EM during his 17 months working with John Phillips and has hosted several EM workshops with John for the guests of the Tree of Life. Having done much research and experimentation of his own, Chip has formed deep connections with EM on many levels and is himself developing into an authority on the subject.

KNITTING BASICS (3 Hours): For the absolute beginner.
Learn how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off.  This class will cover techniques you need to make a scarf from start to finish!  

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:  With over 15 years of experience in knitting, Anais and Jordanne have been commissioned by individuals for custom made items, sold hand knitted and crocheted crafts in several boutiques, have donated many of their items to homeless shelters and hospitals.  They also enjoy volunteering to teach both adults and children the joys of needlecrafts.  Recently, they completed teaching a six week long knitting class for the Pasadena Public Library Summer Teen Program.
