Hi Everyone-
Bob Ferris and Carlene Ramus will be our hosts for the next South Coast
Video Discussion Group meeting on Thursday August 12, at 6:30pm. Bob is
the new (this year) director of the Community Environmental Council, and
Carlene is an architect who has been active with the Sustainability Project
for several years.
They share a home on Conejo Rd, a unique area off of Sycamore Canyon, and
they invite us to actually begin using our permaculture skills with this
visit!
So get ready to practice. We've all done a lot of reading, gone to
workshops, been involved in the discussion group about permaculture,
now let's see if we can put these skills to use. This site is a perfect
opportunity, it has a lot of ivy, unstable hillsides, keep your eyes open
for other challenges. Let's see if we can begin, at least in our minds and
through discussion, help formulate a design that might be helpful for Bob
and Carlene from a permaculture perspective.
Our video this meeting will be continue with a water theme, since Santa
Barbara and the southland is facing a serious drought. We will show "Man
Made Marshes" with Bill Wolverton, a former member of NASA, who later went
on to design biological water treatement systems for homes and
municipalites in the South. Our host Carlene is a raw foods advocate, and
some of our discussion time will include some of her thoughts about how
this particular lifestyle contributes not only to personal health, but is
healthier for the planet. Bring your questions!
Wes Roe and I have been doing the community organizing for this group and
the small non profit we formed, the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network for
the last 6 years. We find we could use some help! We will propose at this
and future meetings some simple things those of you interested in helping
could do. It's not much, but in addition to helping us, it helps create
community, the thing we all seem to want. Each month, with this
newsletter, we will include a Wish List, sponsorship opportunities, and
maybe even requests for contributions for specific needs.
Thanks for your help, and hope to see you at the August meeting-

dance), environmental awareness, permaculture design, practical
