Australian permaculture utilised in Iraqi
re-build -
Australian permaculture technology is being used to
re-build whole villages in war ravaged Iraq.
Permaculture consultant, Geoff Laughton is currently in
the northern Iraq town of Erbil, where locals are
embracing the philosophy.
The work is being funded by the United Nations High
Commission on Refugees (UNHCR).
Geoff Laughton is amazed how the Iraqi's are now using
straw left over from millions of hectares of grain
crops, to
rebuild whole towns. "This is the first time that the
UNHCR
have funded such an alternative building program,
they're loving it , they've doubled our funding. The
local
people themselves are quite empowered ... they're
getting in front of us because they've got quite a lot of
time on they're hands, they're organised on a village
level."
