Carving terraces out of steep inclines, building an intricate network of
more than 70 ponds and growing more than 8000 fruit trees including fig,
apricot and kiwis, and refusing to use pesticides or even fertilizers, Sepp
and Veronika Holzer have created a Garden of Eden (www.krameterhof.at) in
the Austrian Alps. In one of Austria's most beautiful and mountainous
regions, they have developed one of the biggest working permaculture
systems in Europe, growing tropical and sub-tropical plants in alpine
pastures.
Working with nature, instead of against it, is the philosophy of the
Holzer's and Permaculture. Permaculture, an abbreviation of
permanent-agriculture or culture, is ecological design and the development
of agricultural ecosystems which are complete and self-sustaining. The
Holzers' mountain farm Krameterhof (www.krameterhof.at) has been included
in EXPO 2000 as one of the worldwide projects for sustainable futures. It
is an example of successful synergy of land, water and human habitats.
