(LOS OSOS, CA)The Center of Natural Design will open to the public this 
weekend  for a series of Sustainable Resource Management/Permaculture 
Design workshops, with special guests Joseph Kennedy, Jeff Oldham and John 
Valenzuela, leaders in the fields of natural building, renewal energy, and 
sustainable landscape design, respectively.

The Center, a private retreat and learning facility on 10 secluded acres in 
Los Osos, Ca, brings together innovators in the field of sustainable design 
for collaboration and sharing with small groups of students. The Center's 
director, Larry Santoyo, is a business consultant and  one the country's 
premier teachers of Permaculture Design, and will be leading the 
educational collaborative.

Friday night, July 18, 8pm: Slide Show/Talk on Natural Building Techniques 
with Joseph Kennedy Admission to Slide Show/Talk: $10

Joseph Kennedy is co-editor of The Art of Natural Building (New Society, 
2001) and co-founder of Builders without Borders 
(http://www.builderswithoutborders.org/) , with projects on the US/Mexico 
border and US Indian reservations.




Saturday, July 19 9:30am to 5:30pm  Alternative Building and Energy Systems 
This workshop will provide students with an overview of eco-friendly, 
renewable and affordable technologies, with a Permaculture emphasis on how 
to assess their relative appropriateness for a given circumstance.
Joseph Kennedy will discuss Natural Building techniques and lead a hands-on 
workshop on building with earthbags.
Jeff Oldham will give insights into new energy efficient technologies ( 
solar, wind, and hydroelectric)  and systems design.


Jeff Oldham, Manager of the Gaiam/Real Goods Design & Consulting Group 
(www.solardevelopment.com).   Real Goods, under the direction of Jeff 
Oldham, pioneered the world's first high profile Ecolodge-"Harmony" in 1992 
in Maho Bay, U.S. Virgin Islands, where a hybrid PV/wind system continues 
to provide reliable power, surviving both Hurricanes Hugo and Marilyn.



Sunday, July 20 9:30am to 5:30pm Ponds, polycultures, water works, grey 
water systems, water harvesting. Aquaculture and wetland environments are 
among the most productive on the planet. They nourish plant life, provide 
habitat, help recycle natural resources and more. This course section will 
survey the worlds principal wetland habitats, both natural and man made 
(such as marshes, estuaries, chinampas and constructed wetlands).

John Valenzuela will be sharing his knowledge and leading a discussion on 
choosing and using plants in the home landscape (on Friday as well).

John Valenzuela is a plant expert specializing in ethnobotany and 
traditional agriculture, teaches and consults on sustainable landscape 
design around the country.
