Are you ready for the challenges of working in another culture?

The aim of this course is to prepare you for working in developing 
countries, with traditional
cultures and indigenous communities.

The course explores strategies for sustainable development as a two-way 
process in which skills
in facilitation, cross-cultural communication and working with people are 
equally important as the
practical gardening, design and technical skills you take with you.

Activities include:
case studies, presentations, in-depth discussions, role play, group work 
and practical activities,
guest speakers, slides & videos of international projects.



                               Topics include:
                               • subsistence agriculture for humid & arid
                               tropics & the impact of green revolution
                               technology and globalisation

                               • evaluating & working with sustainable
                               traditional cultural practices - building on
                               what exists

                               • adapting Permaculture to local conditions,
                               cultural and social factors

                               • health and nutrition, food security, kitchen
                               gardens
                               • environmental health & housing

                               • appropriate development & technology
                               options

                               • facilitating self-help & self-determination,
                               community directed problem solving &
                               empowerment

                               • communications, education, working with
                               low literacy groups and language barriers

                               • ethics of interference, cultural sensitivity,
                               subtlties of racism and discrimination

                               • personal security, burn-out & taking care of
                               yourself.


A challenging week of intense information sharing,
treading on the edge of personal development.

A basic working knowledge of permaculture is assumed thus the PDC or other 
introductory
permaculture course is a pre-requisitee

Tutor: Robyn Francis
Award-winning permaculture designer, educator and writer with an 18 year 
international track
record which includes founding director of Permaculture International Ltd, 
Permaculture
Education and Erda Institute. Her experiences ranges from the hands-on 
practicalities of food
production to eco-village design & community development in diverse 
cultures and climates
In this course Robyn draws from her experience working in India, (including 
co-teaching India's
first PDC with Bill Mollison), Indonesia and with Australian Aboriginal and 
New Zealand Maori as
well as knowledge gleaned from years of international travel & working with 
Permaculture
activists involved in projects and programmes in other 3rd world countries 
& indigenous
communities.
