What is Permaculture/ Sustainability?
Permaculture is rooted in the ethics of caring for the Earth and
all its inhabitants, providing for
all life systems to continue and multiply. Permaculture offers
positive solutions to the problems facing the world, using
ecology as the basis of designing integrated systems of food
production, housing, technology and community
development. The end result of the adoption of Permaculture
strategies in any country or region will be to dramatically
reduce the area of the agricultural environment needed by the
households and the settlements of people, and to release
much of the landscape for the sole use of wildlife and for
re-occupation by native species.

Thursday, April 11, at 7pm. Global Gardener Film with Bill Mollison
Co-creator of Permaculture
Santa Barbara Public Library 40 E Anapamu
Santa Barbara Permaculture Network celebrates April, the month of Earth
Day, by sponsoring an eco-film night at the Santa Barbara Public Library on
Thursday, April 11, at 7pm. Featured will be the highly acclaimed
documentary film Global Gardener, with Australian biologist and co-founder
of Permaculture, Bill Mollison, who travels the world looking at different
bio-regions and environments, sharing examples of how permaculture and
sustainable agriculture can turn wastelands into edible landscapes.
The evening program will begin with special guest speaker Marcia Boruta
director of the San Diego Economic Conversion & Permaculture Center, who
will introduce the film and also speak on "Peace and Permaculture". Her
recent article on the same subject has been published in Hopedance Magazine
(Issue #32) and has also since been adapted for publication by "The
Sustainable Jerusalem - Peaceful Permaculture Project" in Israel, and by
"Presbyterians for Restoring Creation." During the intermission for the
film, questions & discussion will be encouraged with the audience and any
permaculture teachers or designers who are in attendance.
For more information please call 805/962-2571, or email sbpcnet at silcom.com.
Donations of $3 for the event happily accepted.

East County residents. It is intended to be a study/do group that meets
once/month for classes, and in between at members' houses to help each other
with PC projects in "barn-raising" fashion. We are currently evaluating a
number of PC-learning options such as instructors/lecturers, Internet
(distance-learning) courses, videos, books, discussion groups, etc.
Send the following to bslind at earthlink.net: Your name, address, tel#, email
address ... and a short bio (<100 words)telling about your background,
interest/experience in permaculture and anything else of interest to other
ECPS/class participants.

GAIA'S GARDEN A GUIDE TO HOME SCALE GARDENS
The first book to locate Permaculture in the American Landscape
Activist Editor Toby Hemenway has assembled a practical and user friendly
guide to backyard permaculture. Skillfully written and full of examples
from the foremost permaculture gardens across the country, the text
introduces permaculture principles at work, explaining the basics of this
ingenious language of design. Chapters cover Soil, Water Management, and
Choice of Plants, as well as more advanced subjects as Interplanting,
Guilds, Forest Gardens and Garden Evolution. Drawing on a wealth of
Permaculture Lessons and Lore, the author documents the dramatic successes
of ordinary men and women in bringing barren landscapes to life and in
doing so, he swings wide the permaculture gate for all garden lovers to enter.

Announcing the Opening of The Permaculture Credit Union
The Permaculture Credit Union is a reality. A new kind of environmentally
responsive financial institution has been created and chartered. It is
possibly the first credit union founded upon the Earth Care principles of
Permaculture ethics, namely respect for natural systems, respect for
people, and no waste ( which in banking will mean the reinvestment and
recycling of surplus back into the community being served). Our mission is
to pool the financial resources of people who subscribe to these ethical
principles and provide a financial vehicle that will allow these resources
to be put to work creating a sound sustainable, environmentally responsible
future. We believe we have targeted a market that is severely unserved by
existing financial institutions- those people who are committed to a
cleaner environment, healthy food and water, sustainable energy use, and a
more conscious lifestyle. It will create the opportunity for members to
control the use of money in the community and contribute to the
revitalization of local well-being.
The PCU is now close to 200 with $1,2000,00 in share and term and
needs to grow to more in order to offer more services to the Permaculture
Community. We are also looking funds from individuals or foundations to
help with the costs of running the office as we grow.

Western Cultural Heritage Institute (WCHI) in Montana www.wchi.net a
permaculture community experience
The Western Cultural Heritage Institute has been established to conserve
the cultural heritage of North Americans through the application of
Permaculture principles and practices. The Institute will operate
conservation farms in various regions to conserve the traditional heritage
crops, seeds, farming methods, cultural values and self reliant lifestyles
that sustained these peoples before the westernization of the Americas.
Permaculture creates sustainable living systems, which provide for their
own needs where the ethics are care of our Mother Earth and care of people,
to the end providing surpluses to others.
We invite all interested persons of all nationalities to join us in this
pursuit. Contact WCHI about there Permaculture apprenticeship programs.

It is a new book. I believe it sets a new standard in organic farming
literature. It presents an alternative farming system that is,
biologically, quite complex... yet laid out in practical terminology with
illustrations
and graphics and photos.

5. PERMACULTURE CREDIT UNION QUESTION AND ANSWERS
************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
I am a Board member of the PCU from Southern California. I am posting part
of the Credit Union Pamphlet Question and Answer Pamphlet each SCPG
Newsletter to help explain the workings of the Credit Union for the
Permaculture Community. We are second year of Operations and have done the
work to set up Loan Policies that reward ecological loans that reflect our
Permaculture Ethics. I will explain more of the workings in Future Postings.
As 3/31/02 we have 286 members, approximately, $1,400,000.00
shares/certificates and approximately. $1,449,000.00 in total assets. We
need more members to help the Permaculture Credit Union grow to a size
where it can offer more services to members outside New Mexico. We also
need donations to help pay for the office and staff till income from loans
cover theses costs. Thanks wes roe California Board Member PCU
Permaculture Credit Union Mission Statement
We pool the financial resources of the people who believe in the ethics of
Permaculture and strive to redirect those resources to Earth-friendly and
socially responsible loans and investments.
The credit union promotes thrift among its members and provides credit at
reasonable rates. It creates the opportunity for members to control the use
of their money and contribute to the revitalization of their community and
the planet.
Q. What is a Credit Union?
A. After successive years of bad weather during the mid-19th century,
European farmers needed a way to save their farms from foreclosure by urban
banks. To do this they formed groups to pool their savings and lend to each
other. The first credit union in the US was organized in 1909. However, it
took a severe drought, the Great Depression, and the courage of President
Franklin D. Roosevelt to stand up to the banks and create the Federal
Credit Union Act of 1934.
Credit Unions continue to be a cooperative of individuals with a common
bond who save their money and make loans. Credit Unions are member-owned,
not-for-profit institutions. Banks are corporations operated for profit.
Credit Unions are regulated by the chartering state and the Federal
government and, as with banks, all deposits are Federally insured for up to
$100,000.
Q. How can I get more information on the Permaculture Credit Union?
A. Please call us at 505 954 3479 or FAX 505 424 1624. Visit us online at
www.pcuonline.org, email perma at pcuonline.org, or write to us.
