The Patagonia Store to Host Fundraiser for The Community Alliance with
Family Farmers (CAFF)
Thursday, October 11, from 7 to 9 PM
The CAFF and the Juanamaria Elementary School PTA have been working
since last year with Ventura Unified School District in a pilot project
to test the feasibility of having a locally grown freshly prepared salad
bar alternative for the school lunch.
The project started toward the end of March last school year, and
between then and the end of the school year, working at one school two
days a week, the CAFF served almost
4000 salad bar meals to students in grades 1 through 5, as well as to
enthusiastic teachers. The CAFF demonstrated that (a) kids will eat
their vegetables - they preferred the salad bar over the standard hot
lunch approximately 4 to 1; and (b) that locally grown food can be
purchased at competitive prices. Participation in the school lunch
program went up about 20% on salad bar days. Parents, teachers and kids
were all enthusiastic supporters of the salad bar.
