A New American Dream in Co-housing

A prominent leader for innovative solutions to our modern housing challenges; 
affordability, environmental and social quality, will conduct a free, 
day-long workshop Saturday March 31, 2001. The workshop will be held at 
Avenue Community Center, 550 N. Ventura Avenue, in Ventura. Cohousing is a 
broad term describing a collaborative community process to create living 
environments that are family friendly, affordable, and pedestrian scaled. 
Cohousing often entails creative mixed uses of space based on Ecological 
Design and includes Community Gardens.

Ken Norwood AICP, will present and facilitate the Cohousing Workshop. Ken is 
an architect and urban/regional planner and the executive director of the 
shared Living Resource Center <www.sharedliving.org> in Berkeley, California. 
Over the last ten years Ken has facilitated over 45 workshops on the 
formation, design and implementation of Village Cluster and Cohousing 
Communities. Along with Kathleen Smith, Ken wrote the APA award-winning book 
Rebuilding Community in America: Housing for Ecological Living, Personal 
Empowerment, and the New Extended Family, a 432 page resource book on the why 
and how to of creating community, with real-life examples, prototype 
community designs, and over 250 drawings and photos.

The workshop will include slide show presentation and discussion of 
successful housing models for supportive community and resource efficient 
ecological design. The participants will envision, co-design, and explore how 
to develop affordable, attractive and sustainable neighborhoods. A noontime 
Keynote Speaker will be Ventura County Star, columnist and author John Krist.

Topics covered in the 9 am - 4:30 pm. workshop: Life-style choices, values, 
goals, and criteria; Finding compatible community members, Community location 
and size; ecological development siting; Ownership methods and agreements; 
Design of private housing and common areas; Financing and legal structure; 
Decision making and conflict resolution; and Inspiring commitment. The 
workshop is supported by donations from Cabrillo Economic Development Corp., 
Mainstreet Architects & Planners Inc., and the Downtown, Midtown & Westside 
Community Councils. 

Interested persons are requested to reserve workshop space by calling Maxine

are invited to help form core groups for continuing action and to help 
promote and coordinate this workshop. Lunch can be a pre-ordered burritos for
