Greenbelt Committee to host the 2nd Annual 'Great Greenbelt Plant-In'
Saturday, November 4 - 9am to dusk

Long Beach, CA - The Greenbelt Committee is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Great Greenbelt Plant-In which will take place on the Long Beach Greenbelt between 7th and 8th Streets just east of Termino Avenue on Saturday, November 4th beginning at 9am.

Volunteers are needed to assist in the planting of 500 flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees as part of the Greenbelt Committee's mission to establish, preserve, and promote a public greenway trail along the former Pacific Electric right-of-way in southeast Long Beach.

Last year, over 150 volunteers installed plants chosen for fast growth and for their unusual and interesting characteristics. This year's selection of plants is for color and butterflies and includes species such as Black Sage, California Coffeeberry, California Roses, Foothill Penstemon, Hoary California Fuchsia, Holly-leaf Cherry, Lemonadeberry, Purple Needlegrass, Sugarbush, Pacific Bayberry, Western Redbud, White Flowering Current, and White Sage.

Residents, visitors, elected officials, and the media are invited to participate in the largest all-volunteer community revitalization project in the history of Long Beach. The Greenbelt features a meandering trail which leads through 2.75 acres of oak woodland, chaparral, riparian woodland, coastal sage scrub, coastal strand, and wildflower grassland areas which represent the major indigenous plant communities of historic Long Beach.

Participants are urged to wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen and a hat and to bring a sack lunch and any garden tools that they may have. Additional tools and water are being provided by the City of Long Beach's Community Development Department.
