FIFTH ANNUAL SHORT COURSE ON CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS FOR WATER QUALITY
IMPROVEMENT
Wastewater, Stormwater and other Non-Point Sources
The Humboldt State University's Environmental Resources Engineering
Department is offering a short course on the use of free surface constructed
wetlands for treatment of wastewater. The short course will be held May
15-17, 2000 on the Humboldt State University campus in Arcata, California,
and is scheduled to involve three training days, totaling 24 hours. This
course will be directed by Dr. Robert Gearheart and is intended for design
engineers and wetland scientists who are interested or involved in the
planning, designing, and management of wetlands for wastewater treatment and
pollution abatement. The course will deal with wetland processes, wetland
hydrology/hydraulics, wetland plants/epiphytes, habitat features, design
consideration and construction elements.
COURSE SUBJECTS WILL INCLUDE
1.
Introduction to Wetland Systems
10.
Facility Planning Considerations-Applications
2.
Wetland Ecology
11.
Basis for Design
3.
Wetland Hydrology
12.
Design Features
4.
Wetland Chemistry/Water Quality
13.
Construction-Specifications
5.
Wetland Soils
14.
Operation and Maintenance
6.
Wetland Plants
15.
Cost/Benefits
7.
Wetland Microbial Ecology
16.
Reuse, Multi-use & Multi-benefit issues
8.
Wetland Hydraulics
17.
Regulatory Issues
9.
Modeling Constructed Wetlands (Design Models)
18.
Application (minewaste, NPS, agricultural runoff, industrial waste,
wastewater)
In addition to instruction by Dr. Gearheart, guest instructors include other
professionals in the field who have been involved in the development of the
Arcata wetland treatment project and many other wetland treatment systems in
the western United States, as well as internationally. The proximity of the
campus to many natural and constructed wetland systems provides a unique
opportunity to gain engineering knowledge and on-site/hands-on experience
with this technology. The course will include site visits to six different
full scale operational wetland systems in the immediate area and 15 video
site visits to wetland systems in California and other states.
Related Conference
Included in the cost of the short course is a two-day "Conference on the
Role of Wetlands in Watershed Management - Lessons Learned" is being held
immediately following the short course, on May 18 and 19, 2000, also at
Humboldt State University. The conference will resent case studies of
lessons learned in the application of wetland technologies to address
watershed issues, including wetlands for:
* on-site treatment
* agricultural runoff
* municipal effluent treatment
* urban runoff
* mining waste
* industrial contaminant removal
Please visit this site or contact Barbara Smith (information below) for
information concerning abstract topics and submissions.
Costs
The course will cost $345, plus a $50 activity fee, which includes course
materials, field trips, computer software, and wetland video.
Individual college credit of 3 units can be received for the five-day
workshop/conference.
Space is limited - Registration is required by May 1, 2000.
