Hi everyone
South Coast Permaculture Guild Presents
"Compassionate Listening"
with Gene Knudsen Hoffman
Evening Lecture and discussion
Tuesday, Jan 18, 7:00 PM
Part of the Monthly South Coast Permaculture Guild Meeting
Community Environmental Council, Gildea Resource Center,
930 Miramonte Drive Santa Barbara.
Compassionate Listening is a process of respectful listening developed by
Quaker pastoral counselor Gene Knudsen Hoffman in the 1980's . The idea
behind Compassionate Listening is to set judgment aside while listening to
adversaries, and to look for the values and reasons behind their behavior.
The willingness to hear the other person establishes a relationship that is
trustworthy and safe from judgment - a place where the transformative
potential in Compassionate Listening really lies. It is the necessary step
to establishing dialogue between conflicting parties. This message has a
special meaning for environmentalists to use as a tool to move past conflict
and confrontation to achieve sustainable solutions for the world and its
environment.
Gene Hoffman is a certified pastoral counselor, and member of the
Fellowship of Reconciliation, an interfaith non-violent movement. She has
pursued careers in theater, psychotherapy, writing and teaching. She is a
student of Thich Nhat Hanh and a Quaker.

Feb 7 Monday 7:00PM Cecile Andrews Voluntary Simplicity
Sanctuary of the of the Unitarian Church 1535 Santa Barbara St Santa Barbara
Cecile Andrews, one of the nation's leading advocates for voluntary
simplicity, will be speaking in Santa Barbara on February 7. Cecile is a
great speaker, and her message is down-home and practical. In her book
"Circle of Simplicity", and in her appearances, she describes a proven method
for simplifying and enriching our lives, the "simplicity circle". Modeled on
the circle movement which produced the advanced Scandinavian societies, this
method has helped thousands of people in the United States to reduce the
clutter and stress of modern living. Members of Santa Barbara simplicity
circles will be on hand at the gathering. Cecile will speak at 7:00pm Feb. 7
in the Sanctuary of the Unitarian Church, 1535 Santa Barbara St., Santa
Barbara.
