Creating Sustainable Garden Architecture Using Urban Lumber
September 14th, 2019, from 8:30 AM to 1 PM
Sky Mountain Permaculture - 2855 Cordrey Drive, Escondido, CA 92029
Why are we importing so much of our lumber from thousands of miles away when so many trees are cut down from our neighborhoods each year? Many species of eucalyptus and other trees that grow in San Diego County are high value timber that can be used for making arbors, benches raised garden beds, retaining walls, beautiful furniture, cabinets, floorings, siding and other wood crafts. Our team of eco artisans will show you how you can be part of the regenerative movement by not only turning different parts of fallen trees into imaginative architectural features but also how to create urban forest and wood lots that can grow more trees for the future.
Tom Hamilton from Lumbercycle is bringing his portable lumber mill and will be giving a presentation and demonstration about urban forestry and how to cut and process trees into useable lumber. Then join up with our hands on building teams and learn how to use local urban lumber to create: a beautiful garden arbor; a rustic bench, a “wicking” sub-irrigated garden bed, and eco-art projects (great for children and adults). As an add bonus there will be an opportunity to learn how to operate the lumber mill and help cut up some logs.
Please join us at the end of the workshop for some socializing and light refreshments under the shade of the riparian woodlands with the Escondido Creek running through it.
