ORGANIC REVOLUTIONARY on the Evolution and Future of the Organic Movement
Grace Gershuny, author of The Soul of Soil is excited to announce the
publication of her new book, Organic Revolutionary: A Memoir of the
Movement for Real Food, Planetary Healing, and Human Liberation. This story
records and reflects on the history of the organic movement from its roots
in indigenous practices to the back-to-the-land movement of the late 60s
and 70s, and its codification in law through the USDA’s National Organic
Program. The book also examines the current state of food movements,
including infighting among factions, the organic industry and the sprouting
of new movements such as local, sustainable, regenerative, and Non-GMO.
Finally, Grace looks forward at the impending climate crisis and offers
some insight on the essential role organic agriculture has to play in
avoiding global catastrophe.
Grace Gershuny spent many years as an organic farmer in Vermont. She helped
establish one of the first weekly farmers markets in the state and worked
with the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) to shape Vermont’s
early organic certification process. After becoming a national leader as a
founding member of the Organic Trade Association (OTA), Grace was tapped to
work with the USDA in the 1990’s to develop its organic regulations. Her
work has helped shape today’s burgeoning demand for organic products and
interest in ecologically sound agriculture. She currently teaches in the
on-line MS in Sustainable Food Systems program for Green Mountain College.
The author will be embarking on a national speaking tour in support of the
book.
Praise for Organic Revolutionary:
“Organic Revolutionary is a personal story, but also an intellectual
exploration of the connections between agriculture and politics, between
climate change and how we eat and grow food, between planetary, political,
and personal health.” Tena Starr, News Editor of The Chronicle of Barton, VT
“A thoughtfully comprehensive, entertaining, and deeply personal account of
her adventures in the movement and on the land and characters involved.”
Reeve Lindbergh, author of Under the Wing
“Grace contributed to, and survived the journey of the creation of
“organic” as we know it today. Hers is a compelling tale of the inner
workings of the organic community and the organic industry and the
processes and characters involved.” Howie Ross, aka Mr. “Awganic”
Take care and create a beautiful day.
