[Sdpg] Summer Greetings from SARC San Luis Obispo

Greetings All 

We hope your summer is off to a great start.  We recently finished a productive
academic year, which culminated with a very successful fundraising event in
June.  This was our first major fundraiser for the SARC and was made 
possible by
many generous contributions from local farmers, vintners and chefs, our 
hosts at
Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort, and our special guest speaker for the evening,
Chef Nora Pouillon of Washington, DC.  We raised well over $20,000 for SARC and
Cal Poly Organic Farm programs at the event.  A HUGE thank you to all who were
involved!

This summer, we will be preparing for our Fall offerings and the welcome of
freshmen in September.  The Organic Farm is busier than ever with over 150 CSA
members and 10 acres in organic production.  Stop by to visit sometime and meet
our new chickens, turkeys and baby goats!

On August 20 & 27, ecological landscaper Josh Carmichael will be returning to
the Organic Farm for his third offering of the highly popular Continuing
Education course ‘CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANTS: FROM THE FIELD TO THE GARDEN’.  All
you need to know for identifying and landscaping with drought-tolerant natives.

2. SPACE AVAILABLE AND VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THE THIRD “FEAST IN THE 
FIELD,”
with food prepared by Tim Bollé of Affaire L’Amour Organic Catering. The event
will take place at Rutiz Farms in Arroyo Grande on Saturday, July 16, 2005 at
2:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds raised from the occasion will benefit the
“Buy Fresh, Buy Local” campaign in San Luis Obispo County. The multi-course,
family-style ‘feast’ will feature wines from Wolff Vineyards, meats from 
Charter
Oak Style Meats, seafood from B.J. Enterprises and produce from Rutiz Farms.
Jerry Rutiz, of Rutiz Farms, will lead a farm tour. The cost to attend is $75.
Volunteers are welcomed and needed to assist in making this event as successful

3. DAVID HOLMGREN Co-originator of Permaculture to talk at: “PERMACULTURE 
IN THE
21 ST CENTURY LECTURE” in Santa Barbara.  Tues. Aug. 2, 2005 at 7PM.  Fee: $15.
  Santa Barbara City College East Campus.  David Holmgren, co-originator with
Bill Mollison of the Permaculture concept, is an innovative environmental 
design
consultant based in Hepburn Springs in Central Victoria, Australia.  His latest

of life lived by the principles of Permaculture.  An all day workshop will take

5. INTERNSHIP at Hollyhock Farm of Templeton (www.hollyhock-farm.com).
Hollyhock  is a beautiful family farm in the hills south of Paso 
Robles.  Intern
will receive training in the cultivation and management of a wide selection of
unique varieties of fruits, vegetables and flowers.  The farm also includes
agri-tourism style guest cottages and a roadside farm stand.  Internship
requires 40 hrs/wk of work and provides board, room in a private trailer and
