VOLUNTEER INTERN OPPORTUNITIES
New Village Press, a transformation of New Village journal, is
seeking summer interns to help launch the press and assist in the
development of new books. It's a great opportunity to learn
small-scale publishing business. New Village Press is a project of
Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility and will be
publishing books for the field of community building.
Interns may assist in one or more of the following activities. Skills
and software used for each task are listed, however, New Village
provides informal training and ongoing mentoring, and we also expect
to learn from the students! Interns have flexibility to try
different tasks. We strive to match interns with their strongest
interests. It's a small congenial office in a cooperative office
building in San Francisco. Mac environment.
ACTIVITIES:
Editorial Research - Develop subtopics and resources for individual
book chapters. ** passionate interest in topics related to community
development and enjoyment of investigation. MSWord, web browsers,
Eudora, telephone.
Writing & Editing - Assist editor in reviewing, editing, and
proofreading authors' contributions. ** Journalism and editorial
skills helpful. MSWord, Eudora.
Pre-Design Production - Solicit, catalog, and edit visuals and
captions. Proof and prep final text for graphic designer. **
Understanding of print production, digital images. Organization and
detail skills. Excel, Photoshop, Eudora, and MS Word.
Business Planning - Help update pro forma spreadsheets. Revise and
prioritize distribution and marketing strategies. ** Understanding of
budget development and income and expense reporting. Some knowledge
of marketing or publishing business would be wonderful. Excel,
Quicken, MSWord.
Fundraising - Research potential funders and help draft or edit
letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and reports. ** Writing and
research skills. Filemaker Pro, MSWord, Web browsers.
Mailing and Distribution - Maintain and update data base. Merge/purge
additional mailing lists. Track bulk shipments and direct sales.
**Database skills. Filemaker Pro.
Public Relations - Write and follow up media releases for press,
radio and internet. Update media lists. Distribute review copies. **
Good communications skills. Filemaker Pro, MSWord, web browsers,
Eudora, telephone.
Website - Help develop new site and renovate old site. Update and
enhance content and Meta tags. Increase reciprocal links. ** Web
authoring skills. Dreamweaver MX, Eudora, browsers.
