Hi and Happy 20O4 to all!

Is anyone planning to spend part of their Valentine's weekend at this
event? I'll be coming from Carlsbad. It sounds pretty cool, and a good
place to network.

SPIRIT OF THE LAND SYMPOSIUM, FEB. 13-14, 2004
TO EXPLORE CONSERVATION, THE ENVIRONMENT
AND THE AMERICAN INDIAN PERSPECTIVE

For Immediate Release:
San Diego, Ca. **** February 13-14, 2004, nationally recognized figures in
poetry, literature, the arts, oceanography, and environmental politics and
policy will gather at San Diego State University for the Spirit of the Land
symposium. The symposium, sponsored by the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay
Indians and San Diego State University Library and Information Access, is
free to registered participants.

Spirit of the Land will combine conservation and environmental science
with the American Indian perspective on preserving natural resources and
recognizing humankind's relationship to all life on the planet.

The symposium will bring together a diverse group of American Indians,
writers, naturalists, artists, scientists, environmental organizations,
concerned community members, students, and those interested in developing
an increased appreciation of the environmental issues facing San Diego County.

A few of the notable participants include: American Indian
scholars, Dr. Gregory Cajete and Dr. John C. Mohawk; Dr. Charles F. Kennel,
Pew Oceans Commission member and director of the Scripps Institution of
Oceanography; Sarah Chasis, director of the Water and Coastal Program for
the National Resources Defense Council, Gary Nabhan, director of the Center
for Sustainable Environments at Northern Arizona University; Caldecott
Award-winning children's book author Gerald McDermott, naturalist-explorer
Peter Matthiessen, winner of the National Book Award; and Pulitzer
Prize-winning poet Gary Snyder.

In addition to general session presentations, more than 20 panels and
workshops will offer engaging discussions between experts and activists on
the future health and sustainability of our cities and oceans, watersheds,
rural and natural resources. Through literature, science, shared
experiences, readings, panels, storytelling, exhibits, movies and music,
participants will be inspired to forge a stronger community dedicated to
understanding the environment and decisions that impact the quality of life
and future generations.

A concert featuring American Indian artists Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Keith
Secola, Robert Tree Cody and Annie Humphrey will celebrate the close of the
symposium on Saturday afternoon.
