Dear members and friends,

This month the San Diego Economic Conversion Council and the San Diego
Permaculture Center are promoting Peace and Sustainable Living.  Please
join us in supporting the following local actions.

FEBRUARY PEACE ALERT!  DON'T LET SILENCE LEAD TO VIOLENCE.
Call your elected representatives and voice your opposition to war and your
support for continued United Nations inspections.  Sign up for the e-mail
list of the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice to receive notices of
peace events:  www.sdpeaceandjustice.org or (619) 263-9301 or
info at sdcpj.org.  Participate in local peace actions including:
- Mon. Feb. 10, 2 p.m. - A resolution opposing a pre-emptive U.S. military
attack on Iraq will be presented to the San Diego City Council.  Where:
202 C St.  (For other cities, see www.ips-dc.org/citiesforpeace)
- Sat. Feb. 15 will be an international day of action to oppose a U.S.-led
war on Iraq and to promote peace throughout the world. In San Diego County,
there are several events scheduled for this date.
* Event #1:  United for Peace: The World Says NO to War!  When: 10:30
a.m.-12:30 p.m. Where:  Federal Building, Broadway and Front St., downtown
San Diego / March through Gaslamp District.
* Event #2: Protest Weapons of Mass Destruction.  Rally and march to demand
removal of all mass destruction weapons, beginning right here in San Diego.
When: 1 p.m.  Where: Memorial Community Park (30th Street and Ocean View
Blvd.) / March to 32nd Street Naval Station.
* Event #3: North County Demonstration Against the War in Iraq.  Picnic,
impromptu speeches,
and music.  When: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Where: Cannon Park in Carlsbad (Coast
Hwy. & Cannon Road)
- EMERGENCY RESPONSE: If the U.S. attacks Iraq, gather at the Federal
Building (Broadway and Front St.) at 5 p.m. the same day. If the attack
occurs after 5 p.m., meet at 5 p.m. the NEXT day.


SUSTAINABLE LIVING WORKSHOPS
Long-term peace is more likely if we choose sustainable lifestyles that
reduce our dependence on oil and our wasteful use of natural resources.
The following workshops and organizations address some of the many elements
of sustainable living:

* Feb. 8 - Introduction to CoHousing: Video, discussion, and meeting of
"CoHousing for San Diego!" a local organization that supports the creation
of "Core Groups" and other activities to develop CoHousing communities in
San Diego County.  When: 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m.  Where: Mission Valley Branch

* Feb. 15 - Water Workshop.  In recognition of 2003 as the International
Year of Fresh Water,  La Providencia presents their 3rd Annual Global
Spirituality Workshop "Come to the Water: Mystery, Holiness and Necessity"
featuring Sister Suzanne Golas, Director of Waterspirit.  When: 8:30 a.m -
3 p.m.  Where: Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall, 4540 El Cerrito Dr. (56th &
El Cajon Blvd.). Info: (619) 445-4570.  Cost: $20-25.

* Feb. 21-23 - Cool Weather Garden Projects Workshop at Camp Stevens in
Julian.  Replenish your spirit at this model environment of sustainable
