What is a cob building? Ianto and Linda show us how cob building uses
hands and feet to form
lumps of earth mixed with sand and straw, a sensory and aesthetic
experience similar to sculpting with clay.
Whether or not you have ever heard of cob building, you can pick up this
book and easily follow step by step
the cob building process. The results will be seen in their extraordinary
slides. Cob is easy to learn and
inexpensive to build.
Thousands of comfortable and picturesque cob houses have been built all
over the world, and many have been
occupied for centuries. Ten years ago there were no cob builders in the
U.S. Now one thousand students
have passed through The Cob Cottage Company's trainings.
Ianto Evans Director of Cob Cottage Company in Southern Oregon is an
applied ecologist, landscape architect,
inventor, writer and teacher with building experience on six continents.
Cob is traditional in Wales, his
homeland . He teaches ecological building and has consulted to indigenous
nations, US AID, the World Bank,
and the Peace Corp. Linda Smiley is a director of The Cob Cottage Company,
as well as a master cobber and
recreational therapist. She also teaches workshops in cob, sculpting
sacred spaces, intuitive design, and
natural plasters and finishes.
