Permaculture for Third' World
& Indigenous Peoples
Oct 22-27, 2001
ERDA INSTITUTE at Djanbung Gardens, Nimbin NSW Australia
with Robyn Francis & special guest Rosemary Morrow
Are you ready for the challenges of working in another culture?
This course aims to prepare you for working in developing countries, with
traditional cultures and indigenous communities, perhaps more importantly
it will highlight what you need to know and what skills you need to refine
to be effective in your work.
The course explores strategies for sustainable development as a two-way
process in which skills in facilitation, cross-cultural communication and
working with people are just as important as the practical gardening,
design and technical skills you take with you.
³Effective aid¹ is empowering people with the information and confidence
to solve their own problems² - Bill Mollison
Course activities include case studies, presentations, in-depth
discussions, role play, group work and practical activities, guest
speakers, slides & videos of international projects.
Topics include:
- subsistence agriculture for humid & arid tropics & the impact of green
revolution technology and globalisation
- working with sustainable traditional cultural practices, building on
what exists
- adapting Permaculture to local conditions, cultural and social factors
- health and nutrition, food security & kitchen gardens
- environmental health and housing
- facilitating self-help & self-determination, community directed problem
solving & empowerment
- communications, education, working with low literacy groups
- appropriate development & technology options
- ethics of interference, cultural sensitivity, racism
- expectations versus reality
- burn-out & taking care of yourself.
A challenging week of intense information sharing, treading on the edge of
personal development.
A basic working knowledge of permaculture is assumed thus the PDC or
introductory permaculture course is a pre-requisite.
(NB if you haven't done a PDC, there is one commencing at Djanbung Garden 1
week after this course - register for both and receive special discount -
also special reduction for refresher students)
Go to the people, live among them, learn from them, love them.
Start with what they know, build on what they have.
But the best leaders, when their task is accomplished, their work is done,
the people all remark ³We have done it ourselves.² - anon
