	Permaculture Designer and Teacher Bill Roley of Laguna Beach Ca will Intro 
to Permaculture and Sustainable Wastewater Systems at Real Goods  Hopland, 
CA , this was such a popular course in Aug that it is being offered again ,

                        Sustainable Living Workshop

                        September 17-21, $575

                        Day 1: Introduction to Permaculture
                        In this exciting class, we will cover the 
fundamental principles and ethics of permaculture
                        design in order to broaden our concept of how human 
settlements can synergistically fit into
                        the natural world. Dr. Bill Roley of the 
Permaculture Institure of Southern California will guide
                        us in the pragmatic exploration of "how to think 
about" water, food, landscape, and shelter as
                        integral elements of a regenerative system.

                        Day 2: Passive Solar and Ecological Design
                        David Arkin, Project Architect for the Solar Living 
Center, shares the basic tools to design
                        your own sustainable dwelling. Course emphasis is 
on passive solar design features, and
                        includes discussion of site analysis, 
energy-efficient design, cost-effective alternative
                        construction methods, recycled and non-toxic 
materials, and an overview of renewable energy
                        options.

                        Day 3: Sustainable Wastewater Design
                        Dr. Bill Roley of the Permaculture Institute of 
Southern California and special guests will
                        present a comprehensive look at on-site methods for 
treating and recycling grey and black
                        water for an individual home or community scale 
use. Low-tech and natural living systems
                        design, composting toilets, and permits will be 
covered, along with a tour of greywater, pond
                        and reed treatment systems at the Solar Living 
Center and other nearby sites.

                        Day 4: Beginning Photovoltaics
                        Taught by the Real Goods Technical staff, this 
one-day class covers the basics of electricity,
                        load analysis, system sizing, and the components of 
various systems. Hands-on session
                        includes wiring of a photovoltaic system and a tour 
of solar and wind energy systems at the
                        Solar Living Center.

                        Day 5: Advanced Photovoltaics
                        Day one covers everything presented in the 
Beginning Photovoltaics class (see description).
                        Day two provides a detailed look at component 
options and system design, including the
                        integration of wind and hydro sources, generators, 
and an in-depth look at utility intertie
                        systems. Students will also have the opportunity to 
design their own site-specific system.


                        Building with Stone
                        October 14, $125
                        Learn how you can simply and quickly build 
beautiful, structurally sound stone-faced concrete
                        walls of all sizes and shapes. This technique was 
used by Frank Lloyd Wright but has been
                        modified to appear as a "stone wall" rather than as 
a concrete wall with spotted stone.
                        Charles Bello, former architect and engineer, leads 
the class in building a permanent garden
                        element at the Solar Living Center from start to 
finish. Forms are stripped so that the wall can
                        be carved, sculpted, cleaned, and finished in one 
day, resulting in a long-lasting product that
                        an inexperienced person can complete with ease. 
Learn also how to build benches, load
                        supporting walls, arches, fireplaces, and 
curvilinear walls while becoming inspired to tackle
                        your own projects.

                        Magical Mayan Journey—NEW
                        November 19-28, Tres Garantias Ecological Reserve, 
Quintana Roo, Mexico $1700
                        Leave this world behind, experience an alternate 
reality and make a direct, exhilarating
                        connection to the myriads of medicinal plants, 
exotic wildlife, and Mayan archaeological sites
                        at Tres Garantias, a large ecological jungle 
reserve in Southern Mexico. Daily explorations led
