Friends:
True to permaculture principles, Menlo Lab Communities, a Los Angeles-based
network that creates careers in sustainable urban agriculture while greening the city and mentoring "at-risk" youth, has published a fundraising book, Gardening for People and Planet, that will generate revenue to self-fund program expansion. The book is written for home gardeners and small farms, school gardens, and community gardeners. It distills best practices in organic and sustainable gardening into a short (60-page) manual that covers all the basics in easy-to-use formats. It includes a great section on using permaculture protocols for garden design and growing, as well as directions and reference tools to use in biointensive, biodiverse, and water-wise gardening. Examples and tools cover both two-season and four-season climates. Content is great for experienced organic growers who want quick reference tools for things
like companion planting, biointensive plant spacing, organic feeding and pest control methods, and more, as well as for folks new to organic growing. It's also a great teaching tool.
Proceeds from book sales are used to expand Menlo's urban farming jobs program for unemployed folks, and for youth leadership and sustainable living programs. (See details, attached.)
Please check out the book by reviewing the attached excerpt, or at
www.menlolabcommunites.com . You can order the book off the Menlo website, Amazon, or, for school discounts and large orders by emailing tracy at menlolabcommunities.com . For those so inclined, we will be grateful for your support in spreading the word about the Menlo programs and the book.
Enjoy!
