Since 1978, the Common Ground Garden program has helped Los Angeles County
residents to garden, grow their own food, and healthfully prepare it.  Our
targeted audience and priority are to serve limited-resource residents and
those traditionally underrepresented.  By training community volunteers, we
empower neighborhoods to create their own solutions.  Our Master Gardener
volunteers work primarily with community gardens, school gardens, seniors,
and homeless and battered women's shelters.

In 2008, 181 Master Gardeners volunteered 9,272 hours serving 87,376
low-income gardeners in Los Angeles County at 28 community gardens, 46
school gardens, 15 shelter gardens, 5 senior gardens, and 13 fairs and
farmers markets.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZER

About the Organization
The Urban & Environmental Policy Institute (UEPI) is a community oriented
research and advocacy organization based at Occidental College in Los
Angeles, CA. UEPI serves as the umbrella for a variety of affiliated
programs addressing work and industry, food and nutrition, housing,
transportation, regional and community development, land use, and urban
environmental issues.  UEPI functions both as an academic center with strong
community ties and a community-based organization with a strong research and
policy development capacity.  

UEPI includes a number of innovative projects including the Healthy School
Food Coalition, established in 2001 as a group of committed parents,
students and teachers seeking to develop nutrition policies and mobilize the
school community to improve access to healthy foods through the National
School Breakfast and Lunch Programs in cafeterias throughout LAUSD school
campuses.  Since its inception the Healthy School Food Coalition has been
played a critical leadership role in advocating for policy adoption and full
implementation of the Healthy Beverage Resolution (2002), Obesity Prevention
Motion (2003) and the Cafeteria Improvement Motion (2005).

Position Description
UEPI is seeking a candidate for the position of Community Organizer to
advance the work of the Healthy School Food Coalition. The individual will
work with the Lead Organizer and our collaborators to strengthen the Healthy
School Food Coalition; develop and implement strategies for improving school
food on specific LAUSD campuses and district-wide; and coordinate
community-driven campaigns by working with parents, youth and teachers to
increase awareness, as well as monitor the implementation of all food and
nutrition policies.

Job Responsibilities
Work with the lead organizer to:
.    Outreach to maintain, and expand the membership base of the Healthy
School Food Coalition by reaching out to LAUSD youth and parents
.    Develop outreach plans to expand youth participation in the Healthy
School Food Coalition
.    Conduct ongoing one-on-one community recruitment visits and other
outreach activities at schools, during after school programs and at
pertinent community events 
.    Organize and conduct HFSC membership meetings including preparing
agendas, mobilizing members, convening and facilitating meetings
.    Work with community members, especially youth, to increase awareness
of the district's food and nutrition policies and wellness policies 
.    Produce materials for outreach and education such as fliers and fact
sheets
.    Build relationships with school officials such as school board,
district and site administrators
.    Build relationships and work with press to inform and educate about
Healthy School Food Coalition efforts
.    Contribute to overall UEPI mission and activities.

Qualifications
.    Community organizing experience in low-income communities in Los
Angeles
.    Experience working with youth, parents and in schools
.    Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and
Spanish
.    Detail-oriented , well organized, and able to manage a variety of
tasks in an efficient manner
.    Self motivated, hard working, and possess the ability to work
independently, balanced with the ability work as part of a team
.    Must have own transportation, and be willing /able to work some
evenings and weekends, and travel to conferences as needed
.    Participate in collaborative decision-making and take direction as
necessary
.    Strong computer competencies including Microsoft Word and Excel

Preferred but not Required
.    Ability to conduct research via the internet and to collect
information through phone contacts and site visits
.    Experience in nutrition, public health, urban planning, or other
field related to project work are also desired

This is a 80% FTE position. Starting annual salary ranges from $32,000 to
35,000 (100% FTE) based on qualifications, with benefits including health,
