Since 1978, the Common Ground Garden program has helped Los Angeles County residents to garden, grow their own food, and healthfully prepare it. Our targeted audience and priority are to serve limited-resource residents and those traditionally underrepresented. By training community volunteers, we empower neighborhoods to create their own solutions. Our Master Gardener volunteers work primarily with community gardens, school gardens, seniors, and homeless and battered women's shelters.
In 2008, 181 Master Gardeners volunteered 9,272 hours serving 87,376 low-income gardeners in Los Angeles County at 28 community gardens, 46 school gardens, 15 shelter gardens, 5 senior gardens, and 13 fairs and farmers markets.
The Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Chartable Foundation, and The Home Depot are offering Carson, Long Beach , Torrance , Gardena area elementary schools the opportunity to have a Reading Garden installed at their school. Only one school will be selected.
All interested schools must meet the following criteria (additional restrictions may apply):
· Have a viable 40' x 30' grass or dirt space available for the Reading Garden
· Prior LAUSD/District approval for the build
· Staff available to maintain the garden
· Agreement to review of garden maintenance
· Available for installation late February – March 2009
One (1) school will be selected. Schools meeting the criteria need to submit the following information by 9:00am on Thursday, January 15th:
· School Name, Address and Phone Number
· Principal Name
· Digital photo of potential Reading Garden area
· Include a paragraph (100 words or less) on what the Reading Garden would mean to
