This year I am working with Big Sunday (see below)
and the LA Neighborhood Land Trust (see below) to
redesign, clean up and help organize 2 community park
projects. Both are land trust pocket gardens in the
historic Adams district near UCLA. Both are
maintained by self-initiating community members.
The Date of the event is:
Saturday May 3, 2008 10 2pm
All materials, delivery costs, supplies, tools, etc.
are included and paid for.
All labor must be donated. Both projects are wide open
for ideas and interpretation.
Right now I am looking for an artist to design and
steward a mural at Estrella Park.
I am also looking for volunteers, landscapers,
designers and gardeners to participate in all aspects
of both projects before and during the event. It
could be a great portfolio project for anyone. I am
willing to oversee and help however possible.
In Estrella Park we'll be planting a Chicken friendly
Gardens, which will include building raised beds to
plant a variety of theme gardens, consisting of
plants, vegetables, and herbs from around the world.
There are existing free range chickens that we want to
consider in the design.
And here's the address:
Estrella Park
1960 Estrella Ave.,Los Angeles,Ca 90007 (corner of
21st St.)
Richrdson Family Park we will be adding lots of plants
and mulch to existing beds. Adding new vines around
basketball areas, pruning oak trees. We will also be
planting several dozen containers with a variety of
different themed plant guilds.
Richardson Family Park
2700 South Budlong Ave., Los Angeles, Ca 90007 (corner
of 27th St.)
Both projects are coming up fairly quickly.

Land Trust:

The Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust (LANLT) is an
independent non-profit organization that facilitates
the creation of small, accessible community green and
open space, such as parks and gardens, to address the
inequity of open spaces in Los Angeles underserved
neighborhoods, and to ensure community participation
and collaboration in every step of the process of
creating these parks and community gardens.
To create and assist in the sustenance of parks and
community gardens in under served communities that do
not have such resources.
To cultivate and sustain community pride and
ownership in these places through neighborhood
participation in the planning, development,
programming and management of these neighborhood parks
and community gardens.
To create a model for a sustainable infrastructure
that supports communities in ensuring the long-term
success of these places and to ensure that they will
remain parks or community gardens.
To advocate for greater equity in the distribution of
park resources.
To influence public policy which promotes and
supports the development of parks and community
gardens in low-income neighborhoods that have long
been neglected.
