I have made it a Resolution to create action this year and was wondering if
any LA Permaculture folks would like to join me. I have been thinking of
starting a group dedicated to change that meets regularly in the Santa
Monica/Venice area. These meetings would have films, speakers, discussions,
skill share all hopefully leading towards action oriented events around the
Westside in the spirit of City Repair Portland. The idea of this group is
to facilitate the skills necessary so that we can create change within our
communities. Would anybody on this list be interested in working together
to help others feel more empowered to create change? We can secure a
meeting space at the Santa Monica Public library or we can have various
potluck meetings at different homes in the area.
Also, I would like to invite anyone interested who wants to physically
practice permaculture to a series of cooperative learning experiences. I
have access to land and materials to undertake all sorts of permaculture
related projects at a friend's property in Malibu. Together we can expand
on the PDC course and gain real, practical knowledge with hands on
permaculture projects. We are in the process of putting in an extensive
forest garden, we have a flock of 23 beautiful chickens, and have almost a
half acre of vegetable growing space, all in the beginning stages. There
are also plans to begin building a nursery that can act as a seed for
projects that may happen in the city. We also have a few natural building
projects in the works that can give us the skills to create projects within
our city grid. Anything you would like to build we can do it, we are
finishing a light-straw clay yoga studio that will soon need to be
plastered, we can experiment with a load-bearing strawbale structure, build
cob ovens and benches, you name it. I am lucky enough to be able to offer
this to everyone and I thought some might be interested in gaining practical
knowledge by working together on various projects. Consider it a communal
school for permaculture in which we all act as both teacher and student.
Anybody interested in either, please contact me and let me know. It would
be great for us to play our part in turning this city around together.
