This week's program features Owen Dell, Santa Barbara landscape architect, who
helped coin the word "xeriscape" in the 1980's to describe a design strategy
that reduced the use of water in the landscape while Southern Calif was in the
midst of a prolonged drought. Helping to organize and participate in the Santa
Barbara County Sustainable Landscape Fair more than 20 years ago, where
most of
us in this region first heard the word "sustainable", he has most recently
explored the idea of "Fossil Free Landscaping", as we contemplate a future
with
less and more expensive oil as a resource for powering our landscaping
tools.  A
fossil-free landscape according to Owen would consist of locally-sourced
materials only; plants would be grown from seed, cuttings or divisions
obtained
from others in the community or from local nurseries; building materials would
be native soil, rocks, wood from urban trees, waste stream materials; and the
landscaping would be designed for minimum water and resource use, and all
maintenance would be done by hand rather than with power tools. For more
