Hello Folks,

 

At the Lucidity Festival there was a panel discussion about Regenerative Farming (Carbon Farming) as a solution to climate change. Not only does growing a whole lot of food crops, including trees, help sequester carbon in the soil but it also creates community. In this ‘political climate’, one of the best things we can do for ourselves and our community is to farm together. We already have this solution in place at City Farm!

There are multiple farming operations out at City Farm. We’ve got a mini-farm for high school students, a garden for disabled adults, a meeting area, communal Food Forest, Our Global Family Village permaculture demo garden to showcase food crops from around the globe, a perennial orchard installed by Carmichael Environmental, a family farm growing  peas and beans for the wholesale market, Dacite Farms growing hot house tomatoes and ginger and turmeric that he sells to the SLO Food Co-op, and Red Barn Farms growing organic vegetables for sale at Farmer’s Markets, SLO Veg, restaurants and for the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. We’ve got it going on! Come check it out this Sat!

 

Saturday, April 14th Work Party at City Farm – 9am – 12noon with potluck to follow

City Farm SLO – 1221 Calle Joaquin Road

Come plant a hedgerow of flowering shrubs and native plants around the border of the communal Food Forest area to attract beneficial insects, repel harmful ones and beautify the vegetable garden area. Also we will refurbish the outdoor kitchen used by our school programs for the last four years with a new work counter, sink, and grey-water drainage system.

                    

Saturday, May 12th work party will be all about getting the site ready for our Farm to Table fundraiser dinner on May 19th….

The Great North American "Can we Rehydrate California?" and Soil Carbon Sponge 2018 CA Tour April 11 - 14
​with Australian climate and soil scientist Walter Jehne. 

Former CSIRO microbiologist, climate and soil scientist Walter Jehne, and soil educator Didi Pershouse from the Soil Carbon Coalition, will be holding workshops and discussions from Marin down to LA between April 11th and 16th. Walter Jehne is an internationally recognized climate scientist, soil microbiologist and innovation strategist. He has field and research experience in forests, grasslands, agriculture and soils at national (CSIRO) and international (UN) levels. Walter’s scientific work has focused on soil biology, plant root ecology, mycorrhizal fungi, glomalin, soil-carbon formation, as well as on biology's enormous influence on hydrological cycles, weather patterns, regional and global cooling, air quality, and cloud formation and precipitation. He has a remarkable ability to explain complex systems in easy to understand ways.

Seedsavers and Friends,

 

NOW  It’s time to take a trip to your local library branch in AG, Nipomo, Shell Beach, Los Osos, and Santa Margarita to see if they have seeds that you are looking for to plant for summer.  There are lots of varieties to choose from.  SLO Seed Exchange has overseen the donations - commercial, seedsavers, and native plant seeds from our local CNPS members - to help ensure that patrons receive good seeds, mostly organic and open-pollinated.  Ask to see the inventory list, then check them out no charge.  We’ll schedule a community seed cleaning for August so think about what seeds you may want to save.  Best for beginners are self-pollinated plants that don’t easily cross-pollinate:  beans, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, & peas.  Give it a try this year!

 

APRIL  We are growing a demonstration plot of 4 different varieties of winter wheat that will have to be harvested as soon as they are ready due to hungry local squirrels.  If anyone wants to experience hand harvesting heritage wheat, please respond to this email.  First harvest should be in late April.

Bee-related products are available for purchase, speakers inform on topics including backyard beekeeping, gardening for bees, humane hive removal and more, a spectacular photo exhibit reveals the beauty of bees in stunning detail, and there are plenty of opportunities for hands-on fun including beeswax candle making. The Buzzy Pets parade wraps up the Faire, and if you've never seen an Old English Sheepdog in a bee costume, then isn't it about time?

Farmers’ Market items for Thursday-night delivery.

 

SLO residents are able to order over 80 different fresh items, ranging from fruits, veggies, eggs,

and dairy to value-added products like jams and olive oil from over a dozen different producers.

Orders can be made weekly at localsownmarket.com up to 4:00 p.m., Thursdays, and delivered

Summer Program for Teens - Seeds of Sustainable Vocations at Quail Springs

Youth voices are powerful. At Quail Springs, we are humbled to hear the stories emerging from across the country as young leaders take to the mic to stand up for their beliefs, their safety, and their dignity. We are inspired as we hear of young people standing up for change in our local, national, and global communities. And we are grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside and celebrate with young people as we move towards the 6th year of our summer youth program, Sustainable Vocations! This year, Sustainable Vocations takes a new form as Seeds, 10 day program for youth ages 16-20 . Seeds focuses on the intersections of community, ecology, justice, and self-expression -- and aims to support youth in finding their own voices.

We look forward to hiking up streams, tending our milking goats, expanding our justice awareness, and building lifelong community this summer! Seeds runs from July 5-15th, 2018 at Quail Springs Permaculture farm in the Cuyama Valley.
