Slide Ranch Profile
Slide Ranch is a non-profit agricultural and environmental education
center serving school children, families, and adults set in a small-farm
coastal wilderness environment, 20 miles north of San Francisco.
Gardener - Land Steward Job Summary
The Gardener - Land Steward position is responsible for the long-term
planning and day-to-day care of Slide Ranch's certified organic
gardens. The job requires extensive knowledge of organic gardening.
The Gardener is also required to teach and train our
Teachers-in-Residence to deliver programs for children. Excellent
teaching skills are essential. The Gardener-Land Steward is a
residential position. The compensation package includes housing and
board.
Job Mission:
The three primary objectives of the Slide Ranch gardener-land steward
are 1) To guide the Slide Ranch community in working with the Earth to
cultivate an abundance of produce to nurture residents and land alike.
2) To manage the garden as a demonstration teaching garden and 3) To
provide horticultural leadership and tuition specifically for Slide
Ranch's Teachers-in-Resident and generally for other ranch visitors.
Specific duties include:
_ Guide the Slide Ranch "Permaculture Ranch Plan"
_ To develop new garden areas in support of the Slide Ranch Renewal
Program
_ To guide and inspire ranch residents to be guardians of the land.
_ To manage the Slide Ranch organic garden certification program
_ Assist in preservation and restoration of native ecosystems
_ To advocate for the Slide Ranch Mission in bio-regional agricultural
forum
_ Supervision of volunteers working in garden and other landscaped areas
Community Responsibilities
The Gardener plays a special role in support of the well being of the
residential community around the issue of food; its harvesting,
processing, preparation and presentation.
o Actively support the Mission of Slide Ranch
_ Participate in community meetings, cooking and other residential
activities as required
Application Deadline: Until position is filled
Start Date: as soon after Aug. 30, 2003 as possible.
Salary: approx. $1,500 -$1,620 /month plus housing, healthy food, two
weeks vacation during first year, generous health and other benefits,
and an opportunity to live with a community of people in a beautiful
rural coastal setting.
