Santa Barbara Permaculture Network presents
Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley authors of the Hand Sculpted House
BOOK SIGNING & SLIDE SHOW Monday March 31 7:30 PM at Zalk Theater in the
Upper Ojai
What is a cob building? Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley , authors of
The Hand-Sculpted House; A Practical and Philosophical Guide to Building a
Cob Cottage, lets us know that cob building uses hands and feet to form
lumps of earth mixed with sand and straw, a sensory and aesthetic experience
similar to sculpting with clay.
Last fall's Ojai cob event was a standing room only affair-so mark your
calendars. Whether or not you have ever heard of cob building , you can
pick up this book and easily follow step by step the cob building process.
Cob is easy to learn and inexpensive to build. Cob is not new and not
untested. It's viability has been thoroughly proven all over the world for
centuries.
Join Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley for a special book signing event,
with informative lecture and slide show, as he introduces cob and natural
building around the world. There have been thousands of comfortable and
picturesque cob houses in the British Isles, that have been continually
occupied for centuries and now command high market values. Ten years ago
there were no cob builders in the US.
Ianto and Linda are also conducting several hands-on workshops March
29-April 4 in Santa Barbara and April 6-13 in Los Olivos. Now one thousand
students have passed through The Cob Cottage Company's trainings. Ianto
Evans Director of Cob Cottage Company in Southern Oregon is an applied
ecologist, landscape architect, inventor, writer and teacher with building
experience on six continents. Cob is traditional in Wales, his homeland . He
teaches ecological building and has consulted to indigenous nations, US AID,
the World Bank, and the Peace Corp.
Linda Smiley is a director of The Cob Cottage Company, as well as a master
cobber and recreational therapist. She also teaches workshops in cob,
sculpting sacred spaces, intuitive design, and natural plasters and
finishes.
The lecture & slide show will be held on Monday March 31 at 7:30pm at the
Zalk Theater, Happy Valley School, 8585 Ojai-Santa Paula Rd. located in the
upper Ojai. Suggested donation of $3-no one turned away for lack of payment.
Books will be available for signing by the author. Please call John Roulac
at 646-4367 for more information, or email john at nutiva.com. Visit the Cob
Cottage website for more details on the book and workshops at
