  Ralph Nader to Speak at Ventura City College


          Ralph Nader, the Green Party candidate for President, will speak at 
Ventura City College on the evening of August 22. Nader, the Citizen activist 
who faced down GM in the '60s and who hasn't slowed down since, has agreed to 
speak in Ventura on the evening before his appearance at UCSB in Santa 
Barbara on . He realizes the importance of appearances in such conservative 
bastions as Ventura because his message resonates throughout the political 
spectrum, to conservatives as well as liberals and progressives.

  Nader gained national attention with his 1965 book, "Unsafe at Any Speed," 
a criticism of safety standards in the automobile industry. He has since 
founded, lead  or been involved with a welter of organizations such 
organizations as Common Cause. His focus has always been on returning control 
of the government to the people. "This is a nation founded on the principle 
of  government of the people, by the people, and for the people, not 
government of the Exxon, by the GM, and for the Duponts," he cautions. He 
believes that our democracy is steadily being eroded by the uncontrolled 
growth of corporate power and the corporate money that is being injected into 
our political system. President Eisenhower warned us of the uncontrolled 
growth of the Industrial-Military Complex. Just as the military must always 
be under the control of the civil authority, so must the corporations be 
controlled. "Corporations once derived their charters, and their powers, from 
the civil authority," Nader says. "The civil authority, the people, must take 
back that power and put a leash on the corporations." 

  "Greens are proud to have Ralph Nader and his Vice-Presidential running 
mate, Winona Laduke, the first Native-American woman to run on a national 
ticket,  as its representatives on the national level,” says Tom Stafford of 
Ventura. “Nader’s integrity is unimpeachable and his record of public works 
and looking out for the public welfare is unmatched. Winona Laduke is equally 
well known for her activism on the part of women and the environment as well 
as Native-American causes. Together they are an unmatchable, and unbeatable, 
team.”

  The Committee for Green Alternatives will meet on Wednesday, August 23, at 
7:00 p.m. at the C.E.T. building at 761 C St., Oxnard. Anyone willing to work
