Born and raised in the U.S., Joel lives in Amsterdam, and has been 
working with transportation experts and advocates for healthy cities for
years to advance the concept of carless cities. His book, Carfree 
Cities is the result, being published next month. You can visit his 
website and view back issues of his on-line magazine at

Cars and trucks are a major cause of social, economic, environmental and
aesthetic problems in cities. They hinder the informal social contact 
that glues societies together. They require vast amounts of scarce 
urban land for streets and parking and are the most resource intensive 
means of transportation ever devised. Cars destroy the city’s beauty, 
too. Venice, the largest existing carfree city, is an oasis of peace 
despite being a very dense urban area. Can we design new cities that 
function well without any cars or trucks? Would anyone want to live in 
such cities? Does it make social, economic, ecological and aesthetic 
sense? Is there an effective and economical way to provide transport 
without using cars and trucks? Can we retrofit parts of our existing 
cities to go carless? Come hear Joel and see his slides about what is 
possible and practical when there are enough of us willing to learn and 
advocate for it.

sharp right just past the Forest Service buildings. Continue E. on 
Mendocino Pass Rd. Cross Barnes Road & turn right into the first driveway.

bioregional group will meet the last Friday of each month ("Great Fridays")

now these informal brown-bag lunch meetings will be held at the County Court
House sunken Gardens at 12:00 noon.
        We'll discuss "community", "sustainability' and "bioregionalism' for
this community- which includes business people, students, academia, seniors,
trades people, fishing and AG folks , artists, environmentalists and non
environmentalists alike. Through this process we hope to rebuild our
community,
instill hope, celebrate diversity(human and plant&animal) and begin to protect
and rebuild our commons. in this group's discussions so far we see this broad
bioregionalism discussion as a way to preserve social networks, connectivity
and "roots" to the community and environment.

The award-winning documentary video (narrated by Dennis Weaver) is about 
Suburban sprawl; its causes and remedies. It is 56 minutes and was recently 
released in December of 1999. Produced by Jeff Gersh and Chelsea Congdon.
In the West, as in the rest of the country, sprawl is gobbling up the land.
What makes it more shocking in the West is that it assaults our cultural myths
about the frontier, its wide-open spaces and unique landscapes.
After examining the causes of sprawl and its devastating effect on our sense 
of community and the environment, SUBDIVIDE AND CONQUER suggests remedies, 
and shows examples of sound public policy and good land use planning. It 
seems that, when presented with a real choice, most of us want to live in 
distinct, well-designed neighborhoods, with all the amenities and attractions 
that they provide, and where we don't have to spend inordinate amounts of 
time in our cars.

premier permaculture site—The Bullock Brothers’ Homestead on Orcas

Permaculture Skills Intensive: August 3-20 
An 18-day Ecological Design & Sustainable Living Design Course
Using examples on the Bullock Brothers’ 18-year old working permaculture 
farm, participants will learn to apply ecological design and permaculture 
while living it. Hands-on topics for this permaculture certification 
course include: mapping, water systems, greenhouse operation, plant 
propagation, food forests and orchards, wetland restoration, 
wildcrafting, natural building, solar water heating, solar electricity, 
and ecovillage design. Facilitated by: Douglas Bullock, Joseph Bullock, 
Samuel Bullock, Michael Lockman, Emily Heindsmann, Toby Hemenway, & Guest
