The Ending Destructive Genetic Engineering (EDGE) Campaign of Central and
Southern California and the Community Environmental Council announces the
arrival of internationally acclaimed geneticist, Dr. Mae-wan Ho together
with Luke Anderson, orator and author, for two evenings in Santa Barbara,
California to speak about the critical issues of biotechnology and the food
supply.
Mae-wan Ho is the scientific advisor on genetically-engineered agriculture
for many governments and organizations world-wide. She is the author of
"Genetic Engineering: Dream or Nightmare?" and is a professor at Open
University in the United Kingdom.
Luke Anderson, author of "Genetic Engineering, Food and Our Environment," is
based in the UK, where he frequently debates the issues of
genetically-engineered foods. Anderson serves as an advisor to to groups in
the UK and to Greenpeace International on the subject of
genetically-engineered foods..
Dr. Ho and Mr. Anderson will be speaking at a Town Hall Meeting at the
Faulkner Gallery at 40 E. Anapamu in Santa Barbara Tuesday, October 26 and
at the University of California at Santa Barbara in the Corwin Pavillion
Wednesday, October 27 at 7pm.
It is estimated that 70% of the food supply is genetically-engineered and
over half the US acreage is grown in GE foods. Citizens in Australia, South
Korea, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and throughout Europe have
pushed for mandatory labeling and in some cases a complete moratorium on the
growth of genetically-engineered crops. No independent safety testing has
been conducted in the United States, where the FDA has granted approval to
the controversial foods with safety testing submitted solely from the
biotechnology industry. Currently the US has approved GE varieties of corn,
soybeans, canola, tomato, potato, squash, and radiccio. Labeling of GE
foods is not mandatory in the US
