April 17-19, 1998  HOPES conference, Eugene OR  
Lectures on ecological building ideas, with a one-hour slide show by Darrel
DeBoer about structural bamboo use, especially the work of Colombian architect
Simon Velez - along with examples of bamboo building in the U.S. and the
future possibilities.  There will also be 3 hands-on bamboo workshops to
include structural truss-building, joinery samples, split bamboo woven basket
buildings, construction of scale models and discussion about taking advantage

April 25 - Bamboo Festival and sale, San Francisco 
The American Bamboo Society is sponsoring a sale and auction of rare bamboos,
along with a show of bamboo tools, crafts, musical instruments, food,
paintings, flooring, and buildings.  10-4 at the S.F. County Fair bldg.,

May 2&3, 1998    Building the Bamboo Farm with Sonoma Permaculture
Simon Henderson, of Bamboo People in Washington State, alternative materials
architect Darrel DeBoer and permaculture maven Mike Collins co-teach this
class. Topics include bamboo in permaculture guilds and polyculture, species
selection, bamboo farm and community resource slide show, marketing the
products of a bamboo farm, the design, construction and planting of a
chinampa, and the building of a dome with split bamboo. Meals provided. Cost:

September 19, 1998  Real Goods, Hopland 
Darrel DeBoer, architect and Gib Cooper, Tradewinds Bamboo Nursery will
continue their popular program in 1998 at the Real Goods Inst. For Solar
Living.  Participants explore the use of bamboo as an appropriate building
material in the U.S. Species selection, cultivation, available products, codes
and the future of bamboo in the building industry. Hands-on section includes

September 25-27, 1998  Occidental Arts and Ecology Center 
Beginning with the prototype truss built the previous weekend, we will have an
evening slide show followed by 2 days of building the roof of a small
structure over walls built by Michael Smith in an earlier workshop.  $150-200

The very common golden bamboo is starting to shoot.  This is one we need to
control to preserve the reputation of bamboo!  Cut any of the 2" high new
shoots as far below the ground as you can. (they break well if you're lazy)
Peel off the outer layers until you're down to the white, slice them as you
wish, boil them, drain the water, stir fry with some garlic and hot sauce.
