A Collaborative lecture series with Antioch University
& the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) – The lecture series
Controversies in the Channel will begin on May 24th, 2011 at the
Fleischmann Auditorium as part of a collaborative lecture series with the
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Antioch University Santa
Barbara (AUSB), announced President Nancy Leffert. The series will be
held on Tuesday, May 24th and Tuesday, May 31st from 7:00 – 9:00pm at
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History at 2559 Puesta Del Sol in Santa
Barbara. The events are free and open to the public.
Oil Spills: What we can learn from the Gulf of Mexico- Tuesday, May 24
from 7 to 9 pm featuring Mike deGruy, an award-winning filmmaker. Mike
will discuss the documentary he is working on about the Gulf oil spill
and show related footage. He will explore the potential for an oil spill
in the Santa Barbara Channel and the damage one could do to our local
area. Mike has travelled the world shooting films for a variety of
clients, primarily the BBC, PBS and National Geographic. Mike’s company,
the Film Crew, Inc., produces and hosts natural history films and he is
the recipient of many awards including an EMMY and BAFTA (British Academy
of Film and Television Arts).
Marine Protected Areas and Sustainable Fisheries- Tuesday, May 31 from 7
to 9 pm featuring Steve Gaines, Ph.D. Steve will discuss local marine
protected areas and sustainable fishing practices. Steve is the Dean of
the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa
Barbara. Steve’s research focuses on marine ecology and conservation,
sustainable fisheries, the design of marine reserves, and the impact of
climate change on ocean ecosystems. He has also served as Director of the
UCSB Marine Science Institute and both Acting Dean of Science and Acting
Vice Chancellor for Research at UCSB.
