A tour and class
will be held in the Santa Barbara garden of Larry Saltzman and Linda
Buzzell, who have designed and maintained a backyard food forest in
their yard for over 10 years . The garden contains over 100 trees,
mostly fruit but with some nut and edible-seed-bearing trees as well.
You will learn how to create a garden that is abundant in healthy food
and provides a healing nature refuge right in your own
backyard.
After a tour of the
garden, there will be a class on backyard food forest design and
permaculture principles. Among the topics covered will be living
mulch, composting in place, natural succession, water conservation,
rain water capture, stacking and layering.
Larry, who will
teach the class, co-chairs the Permaculture Guild of Santa Barbara;
Linda, a psychotherapist, is the co-editor of Ecotherapy: Healing
with Nature in Mind (Sierra Club Books 2009). They both have
certificates in Permaculture design and are active in promoting
sustainable lifestyles in Santa Barbara in a variety of ways. They
co-founded the Santa Barbara Organic Garden Club and in 2008 were
dubbed "Local Heroes" by the Santa Barbara
Independent.
This event is RSVP
only. Contact Larry Saltzman at 451-4168 or lbsaltzman@aol.com to RSVP
and get directions.
