In the 11 months Food Forward has been harvesting fruit for the hungry, we have yet to come across an opportunity like the one we are given now.... A 135 tree orchard with tens of thousands of pounds of fruit literally dripping off the trees... and sadly this may go to waste. Last Wednesday, a handful of FF Volunteers and others from Backyard Bounty picked and boxed nearly 7,000 lbs in just four hours!! A small dent in the THOUSANDS of pounds of fruit still waiting to be boxed. Food Forward has been invited back but if we do not get to it, all that fresh, nutritious fruit will go to a compost heap. Heartbreaking yes, - but there is somethingYOU can do to help.
Food Forward will be doing two picks in the next 2 weeks to try to rescue as much of this gorgeous, Grade A, seedless, Satsuma mandarin oranges as possible.
The orchard is about 1.5 hours north of LA, near the UCSB campus - with a gorgeous view of the Santa Barbara mountains on one side and Pacific Ocean on the other - priceless
Grab a friend, family member (only 18 and over - sorry!) and join us between 9:30 and 2:00 this Sunday (12-20-09) and/or the following Sunday (12-27-09). Every hand will make a huge difference
The fruit is being shared amongst several pantries and locations - all across So CAL - Help make your time before/between holidays matter!
Do good while you get away from unwanted house guests! and avoid family drama ;) All you need are gloves and a pair of pruning shears.
You can pick/sort/box for a few hours, then go wine tasting or playing in downtown SB...we need you - the fruit needs you - hungry families need you!
Please RSVP for one or both picks. Details to follow.
