*GROW BIOINTENSIVE® Sustainable Mini-Farming is a small-scale agricultural system "that nurtures soil, produces high yields, conserves resources and can be used successfully by almost everyone." http://www.growbiointensive.org.

**On display will be Irina Kim's 500-sq.-ft. growing area where she is currently testing the following crops in the following categories according to Ecology Action's "60-30-10" formula. The "60" (percent) is allotted to crops such as those in the first group below. Along with some food, they provide much carbon, the most important element in the compost pile. For an explanation and even a quote from Irina on falling in love with the Soil, see http://www.growbiointensive.org/grow_main.html .

Carbon & calorie group: Quinoa, Wheat, Rye, Fava Beans
Calorie Crops: Burdock, Garlic (potatoes were grown during summer)
Vegetables: Bunching Onions, Carrots, Lettuce, Dill

The workshop will include hands-on demonstrations of double-digging, Biointensive propagation techniques, and compost building, An orchard tour of some of the 20+ varieties of fruit trees at Mulberry Haven will also be offered to those willing to stay later.

Irina, her husband Ahtam, and their daughter May immigrated here as political refugees from Uzbekistan earlier this year, due to Ahtam's steadfast democracy and human rights activism and the family's ensuing harassment by the police. Part of the workshop (Q&A in particular) will be in Russian, with Carol's interpretation into English. To RSVP and for more info, write to Carol and also see http://biointensiveforrussia.igc.org and http://www.growbiointensive.org
