Mentor Positions with Sustainable Vocations for Youth

Sustainable
Vocations is a program for youth ages 15-24 that prepares them for diverse
leadership
roles that integrate sustainability into their communities and provides a
hands-on introduction
to
the growing green jobs market. For more about the program, see the brochure at

Sustainable
Vocations is looking for a few bright and energetic men and women to join our
instructional
team
as Mentors for one or more three-week intensives. At the core of this program
is a Permaculture
Design
Certification, which guides much of the curriculum. This position is a support
position to our
lead
instructors. The Mentors’ primary
responsibility is tending to the day-to-day health and well
being of the students, especially the younger (under 18) youth. We will be hiring 1 mentor for every
six
students who are under 18 years old, and possibly a Mentor Coordinator.
The four main areas of responsibility for this position are:
1)
Tending to the youth’s well being during the program, including seeing to
their health, safety,
chaperoning
their camping experience and supporting their emotional growth.
2)
Inspiring the youth’s learning through creative mentoring by being a role
model and participating
in
the learning process alongside the youth, and bringing the Permaculture
teachings into the
youth’s
daily experience during the program
3)
Teaching the youth how to tend to ones daily life needs, i.e. food preparation,
laundering without
power,
solar bathing, keeping ones space energetically clear, gathering water,
chopping wood,
celebrating,
etc. This includes origins skills (i.e. basic survival skills, crafts, music,
using one’s
hands)
4)
Facilitating ongoing community building processes through leading council and
group talking
circles,
and modeling non-violent communication
Who we are looking for:
Energetic
women and men who have outdoor education experience, experience working with
diverse
youth
and families, a zest for learning, good communication skills, camping and
outdoor experience, a
track
record of initiative, leadership experience, and integrity.
Any of the below would be plusses:
1)
Training in the Art of Mentoring or equivalent; 2) Wilderness First Responder
certification; 3)
Class
B driver’s license; 4) Permaculture Design Certification (PDC)
(opportunity to take a PDC at
Quail
Springs beforehand at discount); 5) Wilderness Skills Training, Bilingual
– English/Spanish;
5)
Leadership training
Compensation package includes: This intensive and rewarding position provides camping
and meals
during
the program and prep periods (about a month), $1,000 stipend and a $1,000
credit toward any
Quail
Springs course(s) within a two-year period of time. Possible bonus for candidate with more
experience in the field to serve as Mentor Coordinator.
